People ask me what it is about. Heathens, I mean. My new novel. I tell them a version of the blurb above. I give them a card with the url. That's usually enough. We move on to speak of other things. But these people are the regular kind of people, they want to sell me my coffee, or be on their way. Yes, they are the regular kind, but you are the writerly kind, the scholarly kind, and the authorly kind. I feel as if I should tell you something else. I feel I should tell you something more.

Heathens is an emotional tale. It hurts. It hurt to write, it might hurt to read. It's about the road out of darkness, so that's where it begins. There's hope, and a love story, and believe it or not, there's a little humor too, but to find the road out of darkness, first you have to go in.

Heathens is set in a post apocalyptic world. Expect violence and strong language. Use the free preview--the "Look Inside." Read to the end of chapter two. If you don't care by then, you never will.
