I am currently looking at purchasing an e-reader but am facing the dilemma I assume many face when choosing one: kindle or kobo? I think that kindle have really nailed everything you'd need in an ereader with the paper white or voyage, but I really dislike the idea of being locked in to one platform when purchasing books. I already read a lot of e-versions of books as I travel by train to work and it is just so much lighter, but I buy my books from a variety of sources, usually according to whichever is cheaper. I also occasionally get sent epub copies of books for review and so am worried about not being able to read them on a kindle. At the moment if I'm using a device to read I'll use my iPad, which can read multiple formats, but I find really strains my eyes.
So basically I've narrowed it down to two options - sideload when needed onto a kindle or choose a kobo. I'm probably so torn because aesthetically the kindle speaks to me. But I like the capabilities of the kobo. Oh my lord first world problems.
Would really like to hear any experiences/thoughts in each brand, and how you've handled either using a device that locks you in to one platform or navigating around the restrictions of the kindle devices.
The thing is, you don't have to buy every book from the kindle store. You can buy books from other sites (from your computer) and if the books are not .mobi format, there are free online converters from .epub (which is the other most common format) to .mobi (which is kindle supported format), and then you transfer the book from your computer to your device.
I've done more research since my post and seen some of the converters, which looks great. Goodreads integration would be fab. The kobo I like is the aura one because the idea of the comfort light without the harsh blue light for night reading really appeals to me, but I've read reviews of the kobo screen being buggy and the page turning lagging.
I'm definitely for the Kindle. I have the Paperwhite and have zero complaints. But I may be biased also. The Kindle just does exactly what it needs to do. I haven't felt like I'm missing anything or wishing for another feature.
Ok so I went out and got a paperwhite on the weekend and I'm in love. It's so much easier to read on!! Definitely happy so far. Thanks so much for your advice those who commented xx
