J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 387 comments I can understand why people are reading this book just now. It is like Hillary Clinton is president in the real world US and the world goes on as usual. The thing we are in, is a crazy alternative reality - too weird for fiction.

Of the handful of older books that has surfaced in the stores and on bestseller lists, due to the situation in the US, I think this one it the one that is most relevant to read. I can understand why some people say 1984, but Trump is not trying to undo the meaning of words, he it just flat out lying.

The book: The conflict between values is very well written. Should you do what is best now (Sandy and aunt Everlyn) - or best for every ones protection short term – or be uncompromisingly true to higher values and the big picture (Philip's father). It is so much easier to be quite and not create embarrassing situations (as the Washington visit).

I recently read the The Dispossessed “They think that if people can possess enough things they will be content to live in prison.” (about Urras government). The idea is that people can be bribed to let go of ideals by material goods. The whole thing about the visit to the White House is about the same: People are bribed to to let go of ideals by celebrity dust. If you were invited to dinner at the White House – would you go? It I so hard to say 'no' to that invitation.

I really liked the different moral conflicts, and how the book was written, so it wasn't obvious what was going to happen and how bad the situation would become. I think normally I would have given it 3 stars, but there are some many extra though provoking points right now that I have to give it 4.

Kirsten (kmcripn) My brother gave me this book years ago and I really enjoyed it. Maybe I should re-read it.

CD | 48 comments A provocative paranoid parable for the present predicament with the president and all the pundits.

Completed reading this again for the third time(?) and continue to not be sure of Roth's original 'intent' with this work. It is far to political to just have been the setting for youthful angst or ethnic fear and loathing.

Powerful story if not entirely conclusive or completely entertaining.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 124 comments I am about a third of the way through it right now and it is indeed very ominous with the current political climate. But there seems to be a lot of other subtlety to it as well, so I'm hoping I get more drawn in for those reasons, rather than the semblance to "real life."

Joy D | 286 comments I just finished this book and think Roth was warning against electing a leader who marginalizes a segment of society.:
