Jane (janeboniface) | 123 comments A story about surviving the Nazi regime, both at the time and then living with the trauma after the end of WWII. Johannes, a Polish boy, and his parents ( not Jewish) are sent off to a Nazi concentration camp in 1944. Frau Marks - the mother of Georg from Jackie French's "Pennies from Hitler", is a German but was married to man with a Jewish grandparent. She is caught sheltering Jewish orphans and so she is sent to a concentration camp. Also "Helga" whose past is a bit mysterious. She has not been in a camp, and she carries a dark secret and terrible guilt.
Jackie French writes in the Acknowledgements that this is the most important book she has written (and she has written a lot!). The book's main theme is of the importance of being able to forgive - for both an individual's good, and for the good of humankind.
An excellent read. Would be a great Read Aloud, as long as the listeners aren't too sensitive (there are many harrowing scenes).

This will be perfect to add to the others in the set for our Conflict Resolution Unit our Y7's do.
'When Hitler Stole the Pink Rabbit" is much loved at my school.
