Book is set in Chicago, but when Fritz Lang made it into a film, it got moved to New York. I love Fritz Lang.

First entry! The Drowning Pool, by Ross Macdonald, written in 1950; review is here.
There is a movie of the same name (although it bears very little resemblance to the novel)starring Paul Newman as "Harper" rather than Archer and set in Lousiana instead of California, made in 1975.
next up: The Nanny, by Evelyn Piper.
