Stuck at home, not feeling so great so I ended up finishing this today. I became really attached to the characters and the storyline. The writing was a little choppy at times, but the story made up for it. This is a great, easy-going summer read!! Now I have to mourn the fact that I've already finished it. On the lookout for something new!
I'm still missing the characters from Season of the Dragonflies, but I guess I have to move on...
I have started The Wonder by Emma Donoghue, the author of Room. This story is also focused on a kid in a room, but I think there may be some outside time in this one. It is historical fiction set in a small "primitive backwater" Irish village. The main character, Lib is a Nightingale Nurse from Britain who is appalled at having watch over a petulant child who refuses to eat.
I think this one gets weird, so I hope I can make it through. I'm not a fan of bad things happening to kids (didn't read Room, and I know I couldn't handle it) or psychological thrillers. I am reading it because I was attracted by the sample Goodreads offered so I'll give it a shot! I'll keep you posted!

Update: I'm totally hooked on The Wonder! I was up too late reading last night. I'm about half way through chapter 4 (the chapters are long) and all I know is this book is dark and strange. Not creepy, just weird. There isn't a whole lot going on but that makes it even more thrilling. I thought the atmosphere (dark, dreary, rainy Ireland) would be too much of a downer for summer, but this has been great for reading at night. The dark helps to mimic the heaviness of the book.
If anyone else is reading or has read this book please feel free to chime in! I would love to know what others think about the relationship between Byrne and Nurse Lib. And, what the heck is up with Sister Michael? Is she as hopeful as the doc about the possibility of a miracle child? Such a strange story!

Finished The Wonder. What a strange book. But really good! I have never heard of the fasting girls. There is a note about it in the acknowledgments. I plan to look into it more. Women and young girls were fasting, claiming to go months without food. What a strange world we live in.
I have two options for my next read: The Essex Serpent or Black Rabbit Hall. I thought I already read black rabbit hall but, flipping through it, I didn't recognize any of the story. Sounds like it will be right up my alley though! If you have read one or both and have a suggestion for what to read first feel free to chime in!!
