Mark Lee | 2 comments Hi Folks,

I'm new to this forum but not new to Goodreads. Pleased to make everyone's acquaintance.

I'm trying to identify one of my favorite short stories but have drawn a blank, so am trying here - moderator(s), please feel free to delete if this is inappropriate.

Sort of canonical (I'm sure I read it in junior high school) - an unnamed Western tourist is in some village in an unnamed developing country. He gets thirsty and asks for water from the nearest hut- they dutifully provide. He drinks and drinks, and asks for more to pour all over himself.

[SPOILER]: He later finds out that the only water supply in the entire area comes from one faucet that drips tiny amounts, and the entire village waits in line for hours/days to fill one bucket.

Does this ring any bells for anyone? I'd love to find it again. Thank you.

I think I've read that story as well, but in college. I may still have the collection it was in around here somewhere... I'll see if I can find it. No promises; I have more books than bookshelves, so finding books can be difficult, especially if it's a college textbook. (Though there is one I think I can locate simply because I keep almost stubbing my toes on it. Now if I can remember which room I do that in... ^_- )

Alex Morritt (alexmorritt) | 6 comments You might like this short story - 'Words in the Wind' - recently published in Revue magazine, with particular relevance to 'Day of the Dead' which is especially relevant in Guatemala - the setting of the story - where giant kites play a big part in 'connecting' mortals with their deceased ancestors. To access the story, click on the 'Read Excerpt' icon below the book cover image for Impromptu Scribe Enjoy!
