Solved!Been trying to figure this out for over a week with no luck. Kept throwing out descriptions at Google and nothing worked until just now. Got an author's name that rang a bell. Knew I'd read something by him but couldn't remember what so I looked up the rest of his works and there it is.
The book is Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

An orphan girl raised to be a thief / assassin. Doesn't realize final step at the dark god's hidden fortress (a hollow mountain across a desert) is a competition. Each "master" at the school has a competition. Poison, thieving, information gathering and fighting. The winner of each contest gets one of the coveted spots in the order. They use blood magic thought to be extinct in the world. A brother and sister mage - the brother provides transport to other outposts through pools of blood, the sister provides healing.
