Great story, Marc, thanks for posting.
Although the trope being referenced (one of those that sets my teeth on edge) was clear from the story, until I got to the comments section I wasn't aware of the term "fridging", or the Green Arrow comic that inspired it.
How fitting is it that the first comment is someone lamenting the the story is about girls and not boys? I can't really tell if the person is genuinely that clueless, or if they are actually a master-class troll.

Let's go with "master-class troll"--it makes me feel better about the world. I also found the comments rather enlightening. Truthfully, I just got suckered in by the artwork...
I can't decide if "intelligent person using their brain to be an asshole in an 'ironic' way" is really better than "ignorant oaf".
Tor does have some great artwork, as well as a lot of great stories. Not surprising with an editorial staff that includes Ellen Datlow and Anne Vandermeer.
