Use this folder for any random thoughts, musings or discussion. You can create your own topic then people can respond to specific topics rather than creating one long thread of message.

We want to encourage discussion among members even outside of 1001 reading. So if you have personal news you want to share, book-related articles you want to discuss, or questions for the group, feel free to drop them here.

I participated in Library Things Secret Santa for the first time. I got some really cool books. I also got a The Book of Veganish and Drawing Lab for Mixed-Media Artists: 52 Creative Exercises to Make Drawing Fun from my husband. So, a pretty good bookyear for me.

Looks like you did well this Christmas! I love [author:Carla Sonheim
's approach. My husband upgraded me to a new Kobo - now I can download directly from the library's overdrive offerings!

That’s a gift that you’ll find very useable.

Tracy (tstan) | 559 comments I put a lot of books under the tree. The most appreciated was The Bob's Burgers Burger Book: Real Recipes for Joke Burgers. My sons love to cook, and burgers are one of their favorites.

My son's favorite food by far is hamburgers but unfortunately he does not like to cook. Sounds like it was a good holiday.

Gail (gailifer) | 2174 comments I discovered Amos Oz through Reading 1001 last year, bothBlack Box and A Tale of Love and Darkness and now he is gone. I had such a short time to know of him. However, his books live on.

Quotes:

I find the family the most mysterious and fascinating institution in the world.

A conflict begins and ends in the hearts and minds of people, not in the hilltops.

FYI Kokoro has a review thread but is not part of the newly expand 1001 review index. Not urgent but thought I would mention it.

Kokomo is in my app but I do not know when it was added. Or is there an error in the app. Does anyone know,

Oh, I think I misunderstood. I am slowly working on getting books included. But it is when I have time to do so. Right now most of my time is being spent catching up at reading, but I will take a look tonight. Thanks.

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... | 902 comments A year or so ago we read Siri Hustvedt's book, What I Loved. BBC radio is interviewing her next week and they contacted me to see if I wanted to submit a question. I did. This morning they called to see if I would be willing to ask the question live. So next Wednesday morning I will be doing so.

Hello all.

As you know, Jen left us in 2018. It has been a year now and no word from her here or at her blog either. Even though this was my group originally on Shelfari. Jen did all the set up here when we moved over so she is considered the creator of the group and can never be removed from moderator. Perhaps she will return someday.

Book and I have carried on and it is a lot of work for us. I know Book is often tired and has to limit her on-line activity. She is running the blog as well.

All of that leads me to this announcement. I promoted Diane Zwang, AKA Cafe Mom to moderator. She has been a part of 1001 from the beginning or near there and she is always dropping in to encourage other readers. Diane has some great ideas that she will bring to the group.

Welcome Diane Zwang, our newest moderator.

So I told my husband I had become a moderator of this group. He asked what that meant and I told him. He said "will I ever see you again"? LOL and so it goes. I am planning diversity challenge instead of making dinner:)

Congratulations Diane it is great to have you on board.

Just to expand on my tiredness - for those of you who don't know in 2017 I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis a type of inflammatory arthritis that affects the spine along with all the other joints in the body.

I am now on 2 different types of immune suppressor so if I catch a cold it knocks me out, the condition itself causes fatigue which the drugs don't help so after working full time all day most evenings I am too tired to get online. I am also suffering with another complication recurrent Uvetis (inflammation of the eye) which means screen work is not great.

Thank you to everyone for being patient when it takes me a while to do new randomised books or to update points. I can promise I will get to it I just can't always promise when.

Thanks for everything you do, despite the burden of chronic illness. I appreciate it - and if the randomizer keeps handing out big fat books (yes, I'm looking at you Infinite Jest) to us we won't be in a hurry for more... ha, ha.

Sorry to hear that you’re hurting and exhausted. I hope that soon there is a better way to treat it than your current regimen. Glad that you feel well enough to do all that you do!

Happy 4th to the US members.

MaryAnn (EmilyD1037) I have a question. If I read books read in 2017 and 2018, those books won't be read again for two years, correct?

Books that have been BOTM for past two years are admitted. So 2019 means that books read in 2017 would not qualify (that is probably 2018 books are the other side of alphabet.

Is that what your question was? Or did I misunderstand.

Today's Daily Deal on Amazon et al is The Blind Owl by Sadegh Hedayat $1.99. I believe this is U.S. market only and good for today only.

(Btw, I’m in Norway and got it for USD 1.99, so I guess it’s world wide and not just US).

Just thought I would let you know, John tells me that the 1001 app is not being supported anymore. He recently had updated it and mine would not sync and was stuck. I lost all my information that I had input to get the app back functional. I thought I would give any that have an app to be sure to store info other places, no telling how things will go in the future. His spreadsheet is very good as an alternative.

message 43: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tstan) | 559 comments How do we access that spreadsheet?

Thanks for the heads up Kristel. I noticed my app was having trouble syncing but I managed to fix it. Guess I need to look into alternatives.

So I have my app on an old IPad mini and it is still working. I am not going to buy the spreadsheet as I already bought the app. I will keep using the app as long as it is live. I already have all my books tagged as 1001 on Goodreads so that is good enough. It looks like we have a free spreadsheet on this group site that Book did.

yes, there are options.

message 48: by Daisey (new)

Daisey | 332 comments Thanks for the information about the app. I use Goodreads and the app to keep track of what I have read and which books I own. The app is definitely an easier way to look specifically at list books I've read or have available to read. I'll be sad if/when mine quits cooperating.

message 49: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2174 comments Oh no. I rather depend on the app. I can store what I have read in GR but I can’t tell what is on the list in GR. Where do I find the spreadsheet?

Me too, I really like the app, makes my job easy. I will be sad. I am sure they didn't make enough money to consider keep supporting the app.
John has had a great struggle with the whole thing. The book 1001 publishers had threaten to sue him when he first launched the app. He had to do a whole bunch of things to avoid that.
