Kelly | 998 comments A wonderful and all time favorite book! In Rules of Civility it's author, Amor Towles, wrote a beautiful story showing what happens when two friends, Katey Kontent and Eve Ross, have a chance meeting with a man named Tinker Grey on New Year's Eve in 1937. This affects the direction of all their lives.

The story is told years later from Katey's view after she has been reminded of the events. The girls start out having jobs and live in a boarding house in New York. They love jazz and are excited to meet Tinker. He takes them to upscale places, while they invite him on fun adventures of their own. As the year 1938 continues we see what happens to this group of three friends. A car accident, love, personal conflicts and new acquaintances are all involved.

Towles writes elegantly while shaping relationships and his descriptions capture the feel of New York City. His characters have been developed fully, and he includes both high and low points of their lives. The era is a perfect timeframe for this story helping make it easier for people to reinvent themselves.
