This month I'm asking for nominations for books starring your favorite private investigator.

I've done some digging for you and here is a list to get you going.

https://www.stopyourekillingme.com/Jo...

Please keep in mind

1. This is NOT the place for authors to promote their own books.

2. If you nominate a book and it wins, you are the de facto discussion leader.

3. Please use the "add book/author" format when posting nominations.

That's it -- have fun!!

Derek | 6 comments I enjoyed Craig Campbell in The Reluctant Detective. The Reluctant Detective

message 3: by Donald (new)

Donald Grant (drdon1996) | 129 comments Charlie Parker from series by John Connolly, the first was Every Dead Thing

message 4: by Gisela (new)

Gisela Hafezparast | 368 comments My ultimate favourite will always be Wallander, but my current favourite is Andreas Gruber's Maarten S. Sneijder and his sidekick Sabine Nemez. Infuriatingly these books have been translated in all sort of languages from Korean to Lithuanian, but not English! Figure that.

So, I'll come back to someone I haven't read for a long time, but I picked a book from the series up on holiday and this is Lynda LaPlante's Anna Travis. How about Clean Cut?

Doesn't Anna Travis work for the police? I red The Red Dahlia (which I enjoyed, by the way) and I thought she was like a DI or something rather than a PI.

message 6: by Skye (new)

Skye | 2105 comments I have many but most are considered police officers, although I couldn't find Alex Delaware by Jonathan Kellerman on the list-- he's a psychologist who helps the department. I also adore Parker's Jesse Stone, but he's Chief of Police.
I choose Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone and any book in her repertoire from A is for Alibi to U Is for Undertow.

message 7: by Nancy, Co-Moderator (new)

Nancy Oakes (quinnsmom) | 10113 comments Mod
The group's read A is for Alibi, so if it's Sue Grafton, you'll need to choose another specific title.

message 8: by Skye (new)

Skye | 2105 comments NO problem; I'll brb.

message 9: by Skye (new)

Skye | 2105 comments E is for Evidence by Sue Grafton

Nancy, I am confused; is there a discussion for A is for Alibi?

Not an active one, but if you check out the group's bookshelf

https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...

you'll see that it's already been read.

message 12: by Skye (new)

Skye | 2105 comments Thanks, Nancy, I remotely recall discussing the book during the group.

message 13: by Angelina (new)

Angelina | 149 comments I would like to nominate Jackson Brodie please.

The first book he appears in is Case Histories but I presume this may have been read in this group before as such a well known book?

If so (I don't know how to check I am afraid) I would like to recommend one good turn which is the second book. I have a copy on the shelf next to me so I am able to re-read it with the group that way as not read it for a number of years.

For anyone new to Jackson Brodie the books are far superior that the TV series that the BBC made, even though it was my mums favourite programme whilst being shown :)

So Kate Atkinson One Good Turn if case histories has been read already.

One Good Turn (Jackson Brodie, #2) by Kate Atkinson

I know you read a lot, Malia, and traveling is what I hope to be doing. I hope you had a great time.

message 25: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Hi. I have a John Grisham book that I haven't read as yet titled Gray Mountain. His books are usually about lawyers, courtrooms, and investigations. I believe there is a female lawyer in here, so this would be good and its about coal mining. We may learn some useful information while we are at it.

I can't start til next month. What is the month we are reading this?

message 27: by MissLemon (last edited Aug 03, 2017 09:43AM) (new)

MissLemon | 255 comments My favourite PI is Poirot and I think it would be interesting to read either of Sophie Hannah's new books featuring him - Ive read the first one and had mixed feelings but I haven't read Closed Casket yet.

BUT I'm not sure I will have time in September to lead a discussion so (cheekily) hoping someone else can ( if of course the book received enough votes)?

If not I'm a big fan of Father Cadfael too so would be voting for A Morbid Taste for Bones as I think it's about time I started a re read of the series.

message 28: by William (last edited Aug 03, 2017 10:19AM) (new)

William For me, it's always going to be Bosch (police detective, but works like a P.I.)

My very favourites out of many superb, wonderful books:

The Black Box
The Lost Light
City of Bones
The Last Coyote
- and as always, my very first encounter with Harry...

This would be my ONE pick, to introduce this amazing character, Harry Bosch, to new readers
The Black Echo

message 29: by Skye (new)

Skye | 2105 comments I adore each of those, William!!!

William Skye wrote: "I adore each of those, William!!!"

Yes, superb Bosch. I have more quotes from Connelly/Bosch than any other author!

message 32: by Skye (new)

Skye | 2105 comments I know his cousin, William. I haven't read the last two books, but I will, eventually. Bosch is the greatest protagonist, and I also like Mac Evoy.

message 33: by Partho (new)

Partho Nominee) (parthobose) | 4 comments See when it comes to PI then surely my favourite is Poirot and Holmes but I felt Sophie Hannah didn't do justice with his character, so if I have to nominate someone then would nominate Quinn in Homicide My Own by Anne Argula

I'm thinking that's much more of a legal thriller than a PI novel -- so feel free to nominate it when we get to legal thrillers. Thanks!

Harry Bosch is still a cop in The Black Echo, so technically speaking it doesn't qualify. Sorry about that, William!

I'm thinking Kate Atkinson so far.....

He started out as a cop for L.A.P.D. in the first few books. I haven't read further - does he become a P.I. in later books?

message 41: by Lyn (new)

Lyn | 1 comments Hi! I'm new to this group, but I'm with William - I love Bosch too, but he is a cop in the books you mentioned.
Guess I'd go with Kate Atkinson then.

message 42: by William (last edited Aug 03, 2017 03:16PM) (new)

William Bosch and I are the same age. I missed Viet Nam by a hair. There was an actual lottery on birth dates. My birthday was #176, and they got to calling up #171 by Xmas that year. Whew.

After Harry leaves the force at the end of The Burning Room, he's at loose ends in The Crossing and does P.I. work for his half-brother, Mickey Haller. This was a good Bosch, but not great....

message 43: by William (new)

William So, that said, it would have to be Kenzie and Genarro in Gone, Baby, Gone. Truly a masterpiece of crime-noir.

message 44: by jennsquared (new)

jennsquared | 48 comments Man, if I must only do one... I would say Prayers for Rain by Dennis Lehane.

If I can nominate 2, then S is for Silence is my second choice.

And so many choices!!!!!!! I think I would be happy with any of the nominated!

Garden Girl | 0 comments China Trade by S.J. Rozen This mystery features Lydia Chin, a Chinese American private investigator living in New York City’s Chinatown. One gains an understanding of Chinese culture as well as a great mystery.

message 47: by Hallie (new)

Hallie Biro The Next Accident by Lisa Gardner. Absolute masterpiece in suspense/thriller.

message 48: by S.W. (new)

S.W. Clemens I'd like to nominate Bruno Chief of Police, by Martin Walker. It's the first in a series set in the Perigord region of France.

message 49: by Darren (new)

Darren Tom Pasmore, from Mystery and The Throat.
