NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments Your itinerary is here

When you have a team name, just let me know and I'll update this thread name :)

First stop - Maraba, Brazil

message 3: by NBRC Travel Agent (last edited Aug 01, 2017 07:29PM) (new)

NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments So just to get you started...

Your first stop is Maraba, Brazil

You can choose as a team to:
TASK
- Read books set in Brazil, or by Brazilian authors or
- Do a spell-it-out of Maraba or Brazil

OR
You can elect to do the detour, which for this stop, means that four team members need to Read a book with the phrase "weak at the knees" in a book

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Hi all. Looking forward to traveling around the world again in this challenge.

Any ideas for team names? Some thoughts:

Booking it ATW
Planes, Trains and Big Books

For this stop, I would prefer to do a spell-it-out of either Maraba or Brazil; but I could do the first one (books set in Brazil or by Brazilian authors). What about you all?

message 6: by Lexi (new)

Lexi I like your Planes, Trains, and Big Books idea. What if we made it "really big books" to have the same number of syllables?

I am fine with a spell it out. My to read list is a bit out of control so I am sure I can find something.

message 7: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Hi all, so glad I found this chalkenge again.
Love the name ideas! Im up with that.
I am happy to go with what the majority wants re spell out or Brazilian author/setting

Im not sure where everyone is but I am kn Australia so I might be delayed time wise in my responses

message 8: by Lexi (new)

Lexi Hi Chava! I am in the north-central part of the US. You and I are in very different time zones.

message 9: by Bee (new)

Bee (abirbee) | 667 comments Hi everyone. Sorry to be the last one to check in. I'm from a whole other time zone. I'm from Algeria, in North Africa.
I like the title Planes, trains and big books.
And since I'm currently reading books by Paulo Coelho, a brazilian author, I'm good whith what you like.
Let's go for spell it out though.... It would be easier that way, since I'm not that familiar with much of brazil's authors

message 10: by Jammin Jenny (last edited Aug 02, 2017 01:24PM) (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Okay we'll go with Planes, Trains and Really Big Books...

We have time zones all over - that's cool! I am in the Eastern United States.

We'll go with spell-it-out for this one...

B - Beaton, M.C.
R
A
Z
I
L

message 11: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Completion Post

Book: Death of a Prankster
Author: M.C. Beaton
Date Read: 8/2
How it fits: Author's last name starts with B in BRAZIL

message 12: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments In the next book I'm reading, I can do A or L. What does everyone else want to read for?

message 13: by Bee (new)

Bee (abirbee) | 667 comments I'm going for the A
Wallbanger by Alice Clayton
Start Date: 02/08/2017
Author's first name starts with A

message 14: by Bee (new)

Bee (abirbee) | 667 comments We have a week from today to finish this stop, right?

message 15: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I'm not sure about the time - going to check in the Q&A and rules now.

message 16: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Yes, so we have a week but we can choose to stay longer if we want to. Also, there is a spreadsheet we can use (in message 2) to track our progress and points. I'll add our spell it out to that sheet.

message 17: by Bee (new)

Bee (abirbee) | 667 comments Hi Jenny, you seem to have experience with this. Can we do more than one letter? and can we do the letter more than once?

message 18: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Yes we can do more than one letter, but we can only do the letters needed for the spell-it-out. So, for Brazil, we only need one B so we wouldn't read for another B. If we had done Maraba, we would have needed three As.

Is everyone okay in doing Brazil vs Maraba? If we'd rather do Maraba, that's fine with me.

message 19: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments I created a tracking spreadsheet in the workbook in message 2. If we decide to do Maraba instead I'll update it to change the word we're spelling out.

For spell it outs, we can use the first letter of the title, author initials, character initials, or setting.

message 20: by Lexi (new)

Lexi I have a Z book! Zoo City.

message 21: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Cool!

message 24: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Aug 02, 2017 07:46PM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Hi guys,

If you need another team member, I'd like to join you. I usually read 3-4 books a week. I can also do a R.

I will be away on holidays from 30/8 to 18/9/17 though and although I will have the internet won't be on GR as much during that time. Hope that is okay.

message 25: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Hi Lisa. We'd love to have you. We're just starting our voyage! I guess you should let the NBRC Travel Agent know you are with us. I'll put you down for an R on the spreadsheet.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Oh great Jenny. Thank you.

I posted in the sign up thread.

Do we post our read books here? Can anyone edit the spreadsheet or would you prefer to do that?

Thanks again. Looking forward to playing.

message 27: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Aug 04, 2017 03:21AM) (new)

message 28: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Anyone can edit the spreadsheet. I added a tracking sheet where we can track our progress at each location. Feel free to make it better!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Ohhh, sorry not so good on the Spreadsheets, LOL. Happy just to defer to your expertise there! But love contributing with the books read.

message 30: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Book: Queen of the Universe
Date Read: 8/2
Rating: 4 stars
How it fits: MC name is Lola, (L in BRAZIL)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments I can also do the letter "I"

Briarwood Cottage (Castleough, #3.5) by JoAnn Ross

Setting: Ireland

message 32: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Cool - If Chava can't find something that would be great. We get more points if everyone in the group participates (25 extra points) in each task, but we'll still get points for completing the task (10 points) if she can't.

@Chava, let us know if you can do an I book by next Monday. Thanks!

message 33: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Aug 02, 2017 11:48PM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments No worries. I'll be back up reader then.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Hi team, I just checked the spell it out rules -

Spell-it-out rules

Using the first letter in the book’s title, the first letter of the series name, the first letter in the author’s first or last name, or the first letter of a character’s first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter in the audiobook narrators first or last name.
If you are reading a translated version, you can also use the first letter of the translator's first or last name.

As always, if the first letter of a title starts with ‘A’, ‘An’, ‘The’, etc., you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word.

Setting isn't listed, so my I book won't count.

I was in the USA in May and June (3 times in 8 weeks, it was crazy flying). I loved the US!! I was near Seattle, WA. It was for work (lucky me, they paid for it) and I'll be going again at the end of the year to Florida and next year to Ohio. It was my first time ever to the US

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Hi Chava, nice being on the same team, again.

Yes!! Always nice to be on a team with you!

message 39: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Pigletto! So nice to be on a team with you again as well!!

Hi to all the team members, so nice to see the team is full. Off we go to Brazil!

Has anyone been to Brazil btw? Just curious :)

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello, I was just added to your team last night! I'm from Canada and my favourite genres are fantasy and YA though I will occasionally read outside my comfort zone.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi all! I'm Lori and I live in London.

Chava - Nice to see you again. I've never been to Brazil.

I'll do either a B or L since Jenny read for both those letters. That means we will have 6 members who have read for a task.

I'm a bit confused about "If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points". Does that mean that everyone has to read a book for the spell out? Are we able to do this as we only have 6 letters? or Does it mean that as long as the 2 other members have read a book and posted it here it counts?

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah I was wondering about that too.

message 43: by Lexi (new)

Lexi I have never been to Brazil. It looks very pretty though. I wouldn't mind visiting some day.

My book is moving along quickly, but I won't have a lot of time to read today. Work is unusually busy this week and I have a book club discussion this evening right after. I am hoping I can wrap up the book tomorrow night.

Bee (abirbee) | 667 comments Wow! Hi to all our new members. I'm Abir, Algerian, and it's really nice meeting you all and welcome to our Planes, trains and big books team. That's what we agreed to call our team if any one has another suggestion, please feel free to share.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

Book: Monsieur Pamplemousse
Author: Michael Bond
Date Read: 3rd August
How it fits: author surname starts with B

Hi Abir, thanks for the welcome.

I love the team name. Great film.

message 48: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Wow a full team! This is great.

Thanks for looking up the rules to spell-it-out Lisa. My memory failed me I see :P

I'll remove my name from the spreadsheet for L. Not sure since we only have six letters and 7 team-mates about all teams reading. Maybe we should ask in Q&A? I would think as long as we all post a book that fits in our thread we could get the extra 10 points but I'm not sure.

Feel free everyone to update/edit the spreadsheet as needed to make it more user friendly! It's our tool for tracking and we can change it as needed.

I've never heard of this Stephen King book! And I love his books. Let me know how it is.
