Eric | 9 comments I don't know why, but for some reason, I started Winter's Bone by Daniell Woodrell by reading it aloud and as soon as I did, the words rolled right off my tongue and I was hooked on it.....

Brenda | 2434 comments Two come to mind immediately.

The Martian The Martian by Andy Weir

The book I'm reading right now has the funniest first chapter I think I've ever read. I even read it out loud to my husband. The Deepest Grave The Deepest Grave (Fiona Griffiths, #6) by Harry Bingham

Melanie I agree with Brenda. The first that came to mind is The Martian The Martian by Andy Weir

Mara Pemberton (marapem) | 179 comments I got hooked on the JOANNA BRADY series by J. A. Jance right from the first book. To date I have read all of them. Not crazy about the narrator that was chosen for the Joanna Brady series. Got hooked on the AMELIA PEABODY series when I heard Barbara Rosenblatt narrate CROCODILE ON THE SANDBANK. No one can replace her as narrator of this series. They tried, but it wasn't the same. Now I have my daughter hooked on Amelia and Company. These two series are just a fraction of the series I love. I love C. S. Harris's SEBASTIAN ST. CYR books, Deanna Raybourne's VICTORIA SPEEDWELL series. Standalone books depends on the author.

S.D. Livingston | 4 comments A recent one that really surprised me, and grabbed me from the first chapter, is 'The Cry' by Helen Fitzgerald. It had a clean, taut style and a plot that kept me guessing until the very end. I'd definitely recommend it.

Lee Sherred (leesherredauthor) | 36 comments Years ago, Remote Control by Andy McNab. It got me totally hooked on the Nick Stone series.

message 20: by Amber (last edited Oct 24, 2017 10:05AM) (new)

Amber Martingale Storm Front, Furies of Calderon and The Aeronaut's Windlass all by Jim Butcher. All are fantasy novels but each is in a different sub genre of fantasy.

Storm Front is urban fantasy. Furies of Calderon is J.R.R. Tolkien-style epic high swords-and-sorcery fantasy and The Aeronaut's Windlass is steampunk.
