YA Apocalyptic and Dystopian Fiction discussion

When Tegan was held by the wolves and forced to become pregnant did she self induce her miscarriages or were they natural losses? I've noticed the 4th book hints she may have caused them but never says it right out (or maybe I haven't gotten to the part where it does actually say what happened.) Anyone know?
