10.1 - Rice is Nice
September is National Rice Month. Read a book set at least 50% in ONE of these top ten rice producing countries: China, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Philippines, Brazil, Japan or top rice-producing US states: Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Texas.

Required: If the setting is not evident on the book's main page include a reference or quote from the book when you post.

Emily | 782 comments So to clarify, if I have a book that is split between China and California, can that be used?

(Since you said it had to be set in "ONE" of the countries, I wasn't sure if this would work. I'm looking at The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane.)

50% needs to be in ONE of the locations.
If those are the only 2 location settings then it could be 50/50 or at least 50%+ in one of the locations.
You would need to read it to be sure, but it looks like it would work

Okay, I get it. You're just saying that you can't use multiple locations to get up to 50%, not that you can only use one location. I'm with you now. Thanks. :)

I'm trying to see if this one will work. The setting isn't listed in the goodreads metadata, but from looking at reader reviews and the author's profile on goodreads, it looks like the whole thing occurs in Arkansas (specifically in and around Little Rock). I guess I'll know for sure after I finish it!

If you read it and it works, include a reference or quote when you post
CBS News article states Little Rock

Stephanie (stephsbookreviews) Hello! I am new to the challenge and so excited to participate! I just wanted to check to see if a book would fit this task. I plan on reading Leaving China: An Artist Paints His World War II Childhood. The book has an IL of MG+ and is over 100 pages. Thanks!

Terri FL (territhemuse) | 615 comments I just wanted to check on Shanghai Girls and whether this would work. I know much of it is set in China, but, I'm not sure exactly how much. If someone else has read it, could you give me some guidance? If not, I'll always just read it and find out!

From what I remember MOST of the book is in the USA. But it's been several years since I read it, so my memory may be faulty.

Welcome to the challenge, Stephanie.
Please remember to request a Readerboard name

It may fall under this rule:
"Coffee table", Art books, and other books consisting primarily of images or photographs without a substantial written component (essays, criticism, etc.) may not be be claimed for points."

From what I can see on the Amazon look inside, it has many full page illustrations. Unless there are at least 100 pages of text in the book it cannot be used.

message 14: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (stephsbookreviews) Oh OK, so the 100 pages must all be text. From a flip through it looks like for each spread, one page is text and the other is an image. I will keep looking then!

Tess (tessavanessa) | 2114 comments Can I use this The Hot One for a setting of at least 50% in California?

If it is set at least 50% in CA it would work. You would need to read it to confirm that.

Bryony (bryony46) | 350 comments Could I check if a non-fiction book describing events taking place in one of those locations would be acceptable?

It's always best to include a link to a specific book.

Yes, non-fiction set in one of the locations works.

Bryony (bryony46) | 350 comments Thank you. I’ve been meaning to read a book on the history of Vietnam but I haven’t picked a specific book yet, so just wanted to check if this might work for this task.
