I just started the book and the scene in the corn fields was like an American gothic horror movie. Yikes!
The description on the corn fields was well done.

There are way worse things to be than predictably awesome, that's for sure!

Now, if you desire another treasure hunt, you can look through our past two discussions and see if you can find it! :)

Also, looks like Reliquary and The Wheel of Darkness are the only two I have not given 5 stars so far.

"There is one where the climactic final scene starts about 2/3 of the way in and goes all the way to the end. In the audiobook it was 4 1/2 hours long!"

Kansas is quite a different locale for Pendergast! When I started this book I had a hard time moving him in my mind from the streets of New York to the fields of Kansas.

Yeah, the location of Kansas is a complete 180. I've been there so many times when I lived in Texas & Oklahoma. It's taking me a bit to transition from NYC to corn fields! :D

Not so hard for me to transition to Ks, as I live here, lol. I'm curious how this setting was going to be portrayed. Small town, middle of nowhere I was guessing!

Ch3. He definitely takes charge of a situation when he steps in. I do like our sheriff, too. He sounds like he's going to be a down-to-earth, no-nonsense kind of guy. Do you still picture Pendergast as Paul Bettany? I'm still having a hard time picturing him.

Ah yes - did you get to the scene I referenced - that one still stands out to me as Kansas's intro to Pendergast! ;)

Yeah, I'm not picturing him like that at all now. I know that Pendergast and Bettany both have the pale hair and eyes but it's not working anymore for me. I think it's his Southern charm that's taking away from the image.

I tried looking it up, too and could only find a reference to a Medicine creek the waterway, but not a town. It sounds like this is set somewhere close to Garden City, which I have been to several times.

Completely non book related but horror related.

I just started listening to this podcast today at work called, "We'll see you in Hell". Two comedians basically watch a horror movie and do commentary while watching it. I'm not sure if it will be any good but the first episode is "Children of the Corn." I can't get away from corn right now! hahaha

So, how far on the book have you gotten? Its been a busy week, so I'm behind on all of my reads right now. I'm just up to ch6.

It's been a busy week for me too Terry! I just got to Ch 9 last night.
I finally got to the steak tartare part Matthew. Too funny. The waitress had no idea how to handle him.

Ch 11 - (view spoiler)[ I really like Corrie. She reminds me of myself when I lived in a small town in Texas when I was growing up. I also had purple hair and was a total rebel! hahaha
If she stays interesting and cleans up her act, she might be one of my favorite characters in the series so far. :D (hide spoiler)]

Very cool! Interesting connections to this book. For me, the small Kansas town setting is very familiar, and it's cool they're mentioning the guy from Kansas State University. That's my alma mater, so that's cool. That university is in the middle of nowhere, Ks itself, lol, probably 5-6 hours from where this is set and it is beautiful. So, any guesses yet about what's going on? Not really for me yet. I'm up to ch14 so far.

OK. Going to try to jump into this one while you guys are still reading. I requested the book, see when I get it.

Pendergast always knows - even if something seems like a bad idea . . .

He always seems to have a great instincts on people (view spoiler)[ so I'm sure this assistant relationship will work out. As he said, "He's an outsider and so is Corrie so she'll likely tell him the truth about everybody." (hide spoiler)] Small towns like to keep everything close to the chest. Totally makes sense.

Ch 17 - Finally learn about the Forty-Fives. Damn!
(view spoiler)[. Meet also the character of Brushy Jim. My gut is saying this guy isn't the killer. He just seems like an eccentric Vietnam Vet that suffers from PSTD and loves history. Pendergast always attracts the weird people. I'm sure we would be friends as well. 😜😂 (hide spoiler)]

I'm almost to the end of ch17, too, and No kidding! (view spoiler)[ Seemed like Pendergast didn't quite trust the story of his grandfather, though. I wonder if we find out more about that as we go? I agree that I don't think Brushy Jim is involved, but I wonder more about that Gasparilla fella that he ran into out by the mounds. Seems he knows more. (hide spoiler)]

Side question - when you guys read these books (and other similar mysteries) do you ever just stop and go "Dang, I have to have met the culprit already or the final resolution wont be interesting, but I have no damn clue!" Every Pendergast that is how I am at about the hallway point.

Definitely! I look at each character we meet and wonder, what am I missing?
