I see that you rated this book 5 stars as well! :D

I just started the book and the scene in the corn fields was like an American gothic horror movie. Yikes!
The description on the corn fields was well done.

Terry | 5364 comments There are way worse things to be than predictably awesome, that's for sure!

Matthew (funkygman007) | 1005 comments Ginger wrote: "I see that you rated this book 5 stars as well! :D."

You mentioned you like my mysterious statuses . . . well, I made a comment in one of our discussions where I was specifically referencing this book, but I didn't mention the book to avoid giving too much away. Now, if you desire another treasure hunt, you can look through our past two discussions and see if you can find it! :)

Also, looks like Reliquary and The Wheel of Darkness are the only two I have not given 5 stars so far.

Was it this statement?
"There is one where the climactic final scene starts about 2/3 of the way in and goes all the way to the end. In the audiobook it was 4 1/2 hours long!"

I'm going to be looking at all our discussions now. :D ha!!

End of Ch5 - (view spoiler)

Matthew (funkygman007) | 1005 comments Kansas is quite a different locale for Pendergast! When I started this book I had a hard time moving him in my mind from the streets of New York to the fields of Kansas.

Regarding Ch 3 (view spoiler)

(view spoiler)

Yeah, the location of Kansas is a complete 180. I've been there so many times when I lived in Texas & Oklahoma. It's taking me a bit to transition from NYC to corn fields! :D

Not so hard for me to transition to Ks, as I live here, lol. I'm curious how this setting was going to be portrayed. Small town, middle of nowhere I was guessing!

Terry | 5364 comments Ginger wrote: "End of Ch 3 - [spoilers removed]

End of Ch5 - [spoilers removed]"

Ch3. He definitely takes charge of a situation when he steps in. I do like our sheriff, too. He sounds like he's going to be a down-to-earth, no-nonsense kind of guy. Do you still picture Pendergast as Paul Bettany? I'm still having a hard time picturing him.

Ch5. I'm used to Kansas wheat fields instead of corn fields, though!

I just looked on a map for Medicine Creek, KS and was going to suggest you do a road trip! :P But it looks like it doesn't exist. Boooo! hahaha

Ah yes - did you get to the scene I referenced - that one still stands out to me as Kansas's intro to Pendergast! ;)

Ginger | 3903 comments Terry wrote: "Do you still picture Pendergast as Paul Bettany?"

Yeah, I'm not picturing him like that at all now. I know that Pendergast and Bettany both have the pale hair and eyes but it's not working anymore for me. I think it's his Southern charm that's taking away from the image.

I tried looking it up, too and could only find a reference to a Medicine creek the waterway, but not a town. It sounds like this is set somewhere close to Garden City, which I have been to several times.

No, I haven't gotten there yet but can't wait to read that scene. Ha!!

Ha, thankfully, KC where I'm at is a long ways from there. I will be out in the middle-of-nowhere Ks over the holiday weekend, so hopefully we have this solved by then, lol.

Matthew (funkygman007) | 1005 comments Ugh - looks like when I quote you it doesn't hide spoilers . . . got to be careful!

Ginger | 3903 comments Completely non book related but horror related.

I just started listening to this podcast today at work called, "We'll see you in Hell". Two comedians basically watch a horror movie and do commentary while watching it. I'm not sure if it will be any good but the first episode is "Children of the Corn." I can't get away from corn right now! hahaha
Anyhoo, I just thought this was funny. :D

I remember having this issue with other comments in group reads. This is a good reminder for me as well!

Hahahaha!! I thought since you're a horror book fan that you might like this. I'll let you know if it's any good. Back to the corn! :D

It's been a busy week for me too Terry! I just got to Ch 9 last night.
I finally got to the steak tartare part Matthew. Too funny. The waitress had no idea how to handle him.

Very cool! Interesting connections to this book. For me, the small Kansas town setting is very familiar, and it's cool they're mentioning the guy from Kansas State University. That's my alma mater, so that's cool. That university is in the middle of nowhere, Ks itself, lol, probably 5-6 hours from where this is set and it is beautiful. So, any guesses yet about what's going on? Not really for me yet. I'm up to ch14 so far.

Katy Mann | 988 comments OK. Going to try to jump into this one while you guys are still reading. I requested the book, see when I get it.

Welcome Katy!! I hope you can get the book soon and join us. It's a lot of fun doing BRs on Pendergast books. Lots of suspense and craziness going on in the books. :D

Matthew (funkygman007) | 1005 comments Side question - when you guys read these books (and other similar mysteries) do you ever just stop and go "Dang, I have to have met the culprit already or the final resolution wont be interesting, but I have no damn clue!" Every Pendergast that is how I am at about the hallway point.

Definitely! I look at each character we meet and wonder, what am I missing?
