annapi | 5504 comments I started this book immediately after reading The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, because I enjoyed the first book so much that I wanted to stay in that world and know more about the characters. It took a bit of adjustment when I realized that this book focused on two minor characters, the ship's AI, Lovelace, who in book 1 decided to leave the Wayfarer, and Pepper, the tech friend of Jenks, one of the Wayfarer's engineers.

Lovelace's AI program has been transferred into a body kit, which is highly illegal, and she changes her name to Sidra. Pepper takes her home and helps her adjust to her new life. The story alternates viewpoints from Sidra, who is exploring her new parameters as a person rather than a ship, to Pepper's backstory from childhood, when she was known as Jane 23.

At first I was a bit miffed that I would not be encountering the Wayfarer's crew, but I quickly became invested in these two new characters. While the story doesn't delve deep, it does bring up questions of what sentience really is, and the intriguing possibilities of true artificial intelligence. Some people might find this a bit slow as it's really a character study, but I love this kind of book. The end has enough excitement and suspense to perk the story up and bring it to a most satisfying conclusion. I hope this author continues to write more because I would dearly love to visit this universe again.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments I also looked into this after loving Small Angry Planet, but ultimately did not add it when I realized that it wasn't really a second book in a series in the sense that it would focus on wayfarer.

I may still get to it eventually...

annapi | 5504 comments I thought it was worth it, Nicole, you should give it a try! I breezed through it quicker than the first book, it's shorter.

Karin | 9205 comments I saw that it's about different characters, so am iffy on it, but haven't returned it to the library as I am still planning on reading this.
