Dan | 256 comments Fall must be approaching to turn my thoughts to scarier subjects. Here's a poem I dashed off as I try to overcome my writer's block and continue work on my science fiction novel.

Cyclic Curse
by Daniel Quigley

When the moon is full, wolves gather round
Howling in protest at eternity’s curse.
They depart unsated, divide unwolflike
To begin anew their solitary hunt.

One wolf heads east, another west, yet
These wolves figure not, for it is the wolves
Bound north and to the south, that attend this tragedy.
Cunning northern villagers, have prepared this time.

Valerio’s innate path led north, to blood of doom.
The barn appeared in the clearing, moonlit as last month.
A horse nickered nervously. The scent of girl in heat
Toyed with his nostrils, leading him in to the barn.

Past the stall with the backing, wide-eyed, silent horse.
Up the ladder leading to the hayloft with tones hushing
One another. Too late. This wolf can climb ladders.
Too late. A shot rang out as silver lead pierced Valerio.

Thump, was the sweet sound, of bone on barn floor.
Down came the ax, through bone as it collided
On concrete. A severed wolf head to roll to the stall.
The horse’s hooves hit the door, allowing his flight this night.

Danger passed in the north, but renewed in the south.
Dexter, werewolf this month, newly christened by Valerio.
Felt the need to flee, last month’s calamity, and
With instinct as guide, found virgin, southern abode.

Scents of cedar fire drifted from chimney to dextrous snout.
No light lit the house now, all residents so long asnored.
The wolf jumped the porch, hit the swing chair, and passed off
Only to be rewarded in moment, by light from yonder window.

The front door creaks open; out peers the boy of twelve.
Espying nothing, opens door wider, abides in a doorway
Between worlds. “Enter” invites Dexter. “Do not tarry.”
Oh adolescent, consigned to oblivion, stay, it is cold this night.

Ah, would I had power. Alas, I'm but the chronicler.
A boy and his shotgun, thinking no fear for this world
Stepped out for shredding; bemoaning parents to be burying.
Corpse emergent next month, in perpetuate cycle.

Dan | 256 comments Thank you. I haven't seen this in almost three years. So now reading it I am its consumer rather than creator. I like it more than when I wrote it.

I resigned from my job today. I was being sent to permanently work in the Covid unit. My wife has an autoimmune disease and thus can't fight off infections well. It's too risky. So I think it's time to see what I can do in prose with a werewolf story.

Damian Cy (damiancy) Great! Live life and go with the flow. Often times when unexpected things happen that's when you'll be able to write your best. Good luck!

Dan | 256 comments Thanks. Update: I ended up getting more hours work instead.

I really want to tell this story in prose form. It's just this poem and an outline so far.

Welcome to the group, Darkling. It is good to have someone from Spain join us. I speak a little Spanish, know the word for wolf is lobo of course, but must admit I have no idea what the word for werewolf is, or how popular werewolves and their literature might be there.

Darkling Daath (darklingdaath) | 6 comments Hello Dan
There’s a great great culture about wolfs because we have our own wolf sub-race ....and it was very for the Sheep’s and even people in the villages
Curiously from being under risk of extinction and protected ...they are reappearing again.
Also we had legends and popular songs about the wolf.
Nice to know you know a lil bit of Spanish here the word for werewolves are “Hombres lobo”
Here we had even criminal cases in the our deepest past, here lycanthropy was more extended but somehow the traditional story with the wolf is lost .
