Susie My first book for the American tag. I REALLY wanted to like this book. REALLY. I don't know what made me think I was going to, based on the subject matter. I should have listened to the side of me that doesn't like books that focus on the battles of war. I suppose I was hoping that the literary aspect would elevate the content, but for me it didn't. It is undeniable that the prose is above average, and for that I commend Barry, but the story was not for me. I found myself bored throughout a lot of it and I wanted to race to the end to get it over and done with. I didn't feel an emotional connection with the characters. I was hoping for more about their emotional reaction to their life circumstances and found it quite matter of fact and not particularly deep. I do think that a lot of people will love this book, but for me it was the wrong story. Overall a big disappoinment. I should note that I listened to the audio, but I don't think that impacted upon my experience, in fact I think I would have liked it less in print. Oh well! You can't win them all.

Jgrace | 3935 comments awww, I'm sorry that you didn't like it more. I'm actually surprisesd that I liked it as much as I did, because I'm usually uninterested in battle scenes. I'd never read anything by Barry before this year, but I'm a dedicated fan now.

Susie I'd like to try another one that doesn't focus on battles. I think I could really appreciate his writing with different subject matter.

Denizen (den13) | 1138 comments Susie, can I take the bottom 2/3 of your review and post it for my review? You summed up my feelings beautifully except I was wondering if reading instead of listening would have improved my experience with the book. I suspect not.

Susie You sure can. :-)

Booknblues | 12055 comments I haven't read it yet but want to.

Judith and I often agree on books, so I am following her lead, plus I am inclined to like books with a war setting.

Susie I think you might like it based on those points Booknblues.

Nicole D. | 1573 comments yeah, I had some issues with it as well but did love the writing

Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments Ok, I'm only going to read this if it gets shortlisted now, lol. Which with my luck, it will.
