Suzanne | 1582 comments Wow, I'm really liking this so far. Our new character, Raesinia, is interesting and made quite an entrance. I hadn't read anything about the book previously, and I like the different setting!

Suzanne | 1582 comments Winter's assignment in Part 1...did anyone NOT see that result coming?
I thought Part 1 was a good set-up - our major players thus far all have some assignments, and we can tell big events are in the works.

At this point, I'm most interested in Raesinia, especially given her special ability. (view spoiler)

Nico (darkybald) Yep very nice set up and very different from the first book. Seems like the focus will be on the political intrigues this time, rather than a huge military campaign. But I guess it will escalate soon and we will get our fair share of fighting :)

It took me a bit to get back into this one, but by the end of this part I seem to have my bearings again and I'm enjoying it.

I find the fact that everyone is pretending to be someone else amusing. So now we have a women pretending to be a male soldier pretending to be a female student.

And for good measure we have the princess also pretending to be someone else to act as a revolutionary. He should have called this book "The Pretenders"!

So I totally should have seen Jane as the leader of the leatherbacks coming. I wonder if Winter will tell her the full truth, and if so how she'll react.

As far as Raesina, maybe she's got a demon in her. Obviously something crazy was done to her and it has a lasting effect because now she just casually throws herself off buildings as a means of avoiding detection.

That's a good point about it not controlling her. But maybe it's just biding it's time?

Richard Eyres (richardeyres) Just finished the first part. Enjoyed it, but I kind of miss the sand and heat setting of the first book. I knew it would change - as it was mentioned in the closing of the previous book.

I did not see Jane being the leader of the Leatherbacks. Was expecting that to be later. I really enjoyed their encounter. Will have to wait to see how that goes.

Raesinia is interesting. Both her ability and what she is aiming for.

Hope Bobby and the rest of the company make an appearance in part 2

Sumant | 522 comments I like our new pov characters of Orlanko & Raesinia. Also Wexler has shifted to political intrigue in this story so far he has me hooked regarding the story.

The other thing which I am noticing is the world building done by him, its really good and subtle because he is not interrupting the flow of story while doing so.
