I love Octopi... ever since I learned how smart they are... if you put them in a jar they can unscrew it from the inside... there are stories of them in zoos breaking out of their tank at night to eat their fishy neighbors when the guards aren't around and then sneaking back into their own tanks (they learn the guard rotations... only the cameras give them away)... etc

Zaara | 4273 comments Good to know. Satisfaction is our motto chez Team PNR Raiders.

Ok I am not even gonna apo for timezone/lack of GR notification-induced super late reply.
Xcuz I'm so effin glad I'm seeing this in the early evening rather than late at night when it would have given my craven & lily-livered sensibilities the shakes and staggers.
Super-intelligent and sneaky giant tentacled things stalking their unwitting humans and eating everything smaller? And then vanishing...leaving not a trace behind?
Thazz some serious Blair Witch sh!t...
I read War of the Worlds (is that the one with the sentient tentacled machines?) when I was thirteen, I think. Gave me screaming nightmares for more than a week.
Xcuz I'm a fukkin coward, O'Malley.
I don't even read/watch horror xept someone on GR longago made me promise to read the Shining...I wouldn't go into it until I had at least ten ppl reading with me. I finished tho. Proud of me! Xcuz for me, that's major balls.
I swear, the cowardice (and my floral teacups) are the only nauseatingly girly things. Otherwise I'm 3/4 a man, I'm reliably informed by my 'hood.

Having set myself up like that...you're gonna unleash the creepy neon GIFs at Random Unexpected Moments, aren't you?

Excellent timing, Iain. Did you plan for it to hit me right before lunch or was that mah baaaaaaad?
Take it away now.
Sooooo....there's this scene in Low Town where:
Mild but deffo plot-related spoils
(view spoiler)
Nowhere in the book blurb (which promised a kind of Oliver Twist/Locke Lamora on spe€€d) is there even a hint...so I'm chalking this down as a dirty trick + needless to say, Craven McCoy did not spend the night amid the Sweet Dreamless. Naaaaw, I did what I been doing a lot recently: watched a lot of Dave Chappell & Chris Rock + that cheesy cop movie with Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. My ways have been all Lowry awry this past week...
:-D
I'm liking Low Town more than a little, despite such creepy surprises. Xcuz I figure the only way to get thru these great crises of the human experience is to soldier on and let them spit you out the other end?
How's it going with Wrath or is it Ruin? I'm too ashamed to show my face on the book thread.

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5356 comments I decided to check out your tracker to see what else you're reading cuz I like being in buddy reads with you (you're one of the few that responds to me) and my god man. How do you manage so many books in a month? I already had to cut down my list cuz I just couldn't handle it.

message 30: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 403 comments Wow you have a full schedule. My list is definitely light compared to yours.

message 31: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35227 comments Mod
I listen to 100-150hrs of audiobooks per month at work... and then I try to get reading done at home, as well, with varying success... that takes care of most of these books as long as there aren't too many 55hr Oathbringer behemoths...

I'll be able to get more reading done if I can continue listening at 1.25-1.5x speed, too...

This is about the limit, I think, for what I can handle... maybe a little over the limit... we'll see if I manage it going forward... the way they tend to cluster is a bit stressful... 2 days isn't always enough time to read something...

I'm surprisingly almost on schedule at the moment... I'm listening to Strange Dogs (novella) + Persepolis Rising next, and have 3 days before Curse of Chalion starts...

I have a feeling I might have to drop Malazan... I hope not, but they say it's too dense for audio, and I don't make much time for Kindle these days...

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5356 comments That's how I am. Most of my reading is done at work via audio. But I get my audiobooks from the overdrive app so selection is slim. A lot of buddy reads I have to skip cuz they don't have it :(

You just need to learn that you don't have to jump in on every BR. From what I've seen around here is that eventually another BR opportunity for the same book/series will come up again at some later point so there's no need to overload. Otherwise, this might be a road to burnout. Pace yourself, man! :-)

Iain's 2018 schedule:

ALL THE EFFING THINGS.

you can do it! Most of it, anyway. :P

I worry most about burnout. i.e. not enjoying what I'm reading because I'm so focused on "getting through" it to get to the next read. There's a lot of pressure going into 2018.

That's what I'm starting to feel Niki. Like I'm reading just to get through to my next one, and that's not really fun. I'm going to drop some things.

I personally think that's a great idea. I figured the worst that can happen if I join the buddy reads late or not at all is that I just won't get extra points. I'm much more productive for my team if I'm having fun. :) I'm trying not to get super crazy with the other challenges, but it's hard not to look at series completion like something to be achieved rather than enjoyed.

message 45: by Hailee (new)

Hailee | 2762 comments I'm lucky at the moment, because I'm new most of the buddy reads were already organised without me anyway so I'm just keeping an awareness of what is coming up and then I can judge if I have time to read it as it approaches.

Of course that only works for the ones already organised. I've already committed to quite a few later on in the year as they are only just being organised. I'll have to keep Veronica's advice in mind 😅 I've already deleted a load of ones from my tracker that I know I won't get to. I only had them on there because the books were sitting on my shelf. But as Veronica said hopefully they'll come up again.

You guys all make good points... I haven't had much time for new releases (except Expanse) or other genres in nearly a month... January is going to be make or break I think...

I'm trying to ignore the BR Invite thread for awhile... and will probably have to drop some stuff (longer series first, I think, so as to have a bigger impact)

Only thing going for me right now is the revelation of increased playback speed... I've been listening to Expanse at work at 1.5x like I did Son of the Shadows at home... that's 50% more reading getting done... so 8 BRs only take the time of 5.33 old BRs... I think it'll vary by book, tho...

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5356 comments Yeah, I love Overdrive cuz I listen at 1.4 speed. I've gotten so regular speed drives me insane cuz it's so slow.

I get the love because me and Diana read at similar speeds and I go back and comment a lot :)... Buddy Reads have been hoppin' recently, and it's gotten to the point very few of us are reading the same books at the same time (or so it seems)... me and Diana have been talking in Sevenwaters (#2), First Law (#2), and Oathbringer threads quite a bit... and we have 3 more scheduled buddy reads together this month

We just have short-term memories Zaara :)
