So how did the discussion of When Darkness Reigns go? I sure hated to miss it!

It was good! Very mixed reaction. I did not care so much for the book, others found it very interesting. Eugene shared a lot about growing up with LA gangs, being Asian he was just the middle guy, and the black and Mexicans considered him neutral. He also shared his work in the prisons with women. I told Gene he needs to write a book!

I personally thought When Darkness Reigns was flawed, I did not like how the initial recount of the crime failed to include "Tony" at all when he was there. (Except being spotted at the end by police). That felt very manipulative. The scores were 1-5 with a 3.3 being the overall score. I had just finished an extraordinary work of non fiction before starting it and the comparison might have ruined it.

What did you think of the book? The link to the LA Times article I thought gave a better, less biased telling of the story.

Spain and Portugal were amazing and I loved every minute of the trip. Just reading When Darkness Reigns now and I agree it's flawed, but I'm still enjoying it because I'm learning so much about gang life. Not quite done yet. Will post more when finished.
