Robin (robinmy) | 1214 comments I have a question:

Both Chu and Kiz betrayed Harry in this book. How did you feel about it? Can you see why either of them did it? Would you forgive either of them?

I understood Kiz’s betrayal as she thought she was helping him and the greater good. It just proved she really doesn’t know him as well as we thought or she’s just been corrupted.

Chi is the one I really don’t understand. Blowing that case might have damaged Harry, given him a path to a new partner without him having to instigate it. But he would have been damaged, too. The impression I’ve always had of him is he’s got a weak spine and is a little sniveling.

Kiz isn’t asking for forgiveness so that ain’t gonna happen. Her relationship with Harry will never again be the same. His relationship with her was the only one he’s had where there was mutual respect and admiration. I’m sorry to see it fractured.

Harry forgave Chu but will never trust him again. I don’t give this partnership long.

Robin (robinmy) | 1214 comments I'd be more apt to forgive Chu, probably because I could see how frustrated he was with the way Harry treats him during the investigations. (Harry frustrates me during the investigations too.) As you mentioned, I don't know why he would chose to blow up the case since it would hurt himself too. All I can guess is that it would look like Harry failed on this case without any help from Chu because he didn't ask for Chu to help in any meaningful way.

What Kiz did really bothers me. I held her in high esteem and she just fell off of the pedestal.

I was stunned when she made that statement to Harry. It stuck with me and not in a good way.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments Harry has a tendency to forgive his partners for these acts of betrayal.

I agree that Kiz is worse as she has been friends with Harry for so long and she knows better. Chu is still a rookie in many ways and he knows he was in the wrong and made amends while Kiz doesn't and won't.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments I really enjoyed this one. It had many of the elements that I like in the series - a cold case, cop intrigue.

I also want to mention that I love Harry's relationship with Maddie. She's a good kid and I like how close they are.

Maddie has changed Harry in really subtle (and good!) ways...softened those edges and given him pause in how he thinks about crime and punishment. I’m loving their relationship, too. It could have gone so bad for them given how Eleanor died. I wonder if Maddie knows how much he loved her mother.

It really could have! But then, Harry insisted Maddie get the help she needed to forgive herself and him.
