A History of Halloween Challenge



When the first day of Fall hits, Mod Trea always starts looking forward to her favorite holiday: Halloween! She thought it would be cool to check out this holiday’s origins this month!

RULES: Choose from the list below, selecting a category more than once, if you desire. Also, there is the Spell-It-Out Option. Or you may do a bit of both!

Halloween is a contraction of All Hallows Evening: Read a book with a Contraction in the title.
All Hallows' Eve revolves around the theme of using "humor and ridicule to confront the power of death.": Read a book with a ghost, zombie, or undead character, or has the word “death” in the title.
Early Halloween celebrations could have been influenced by Pagan Samhain rituals: Read a book where a character practices Wicca or is a witch.
Samhain is celebrated at the same time as Halloween, but for different reasons-it focuses on the end of the harvest and the loss (death) of the consort God: Read a book set in the season of Fall, where a crop is harvested or where a main character loses something or someone close to them.
Halloween is the night before All Saints Day: Read a book that is labeled as Inspirational.
The annual New York Halloween Parade is the world's largest Halloween parade and one of America's only major nighttime parades: Read a book set in New York.
Jack-o'-lanterns are traditionally carried on Halloween in order to frighten evil spirits. The jack-o'-lantern, in lore, is said to represent a "soul who has been denied entry into both heaven and hell": Read a book where someone is denied entrance to a location or event.
Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on Halloween: Read a book with a young child in it.
Halloween costumes are traditionally modeled after supernatural figures such as vampires, monsters, ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils: Read a book with a traditional supernatural figure as a main character.
"Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" is a fundraising program that provides humanitarian aid to children in developing countries. Started as a local event in a Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood in 1950 and expanded nationally in 1952, the program involves the distribution of small boxes by schools (or in modern times, corporate sponsors like Hallmark, at their licensed stores) to trick-or-treaters, in which they can solicit small-change donations from the houses they visit: Read a book where a character does charity work or a book set in the 1950s.
There are several games traditionally associated with Halloween parties. One common game is dunking or apple bobbing: Read a book with a party in it, or a book with a red, yellow, or Green cover.
Haunted attractions are entertainment venues designed to thrill and scare patrons. Origins of these paid scare venues are difficult to pinpoint, but it is generally accepted that they were first commonly used by the Junior Chamber International (Jaycees) for fundraising. They include haunted houses, corn mazes, and hayrides: Read a book where someone gets scared going to a building or field.
Halloween has several different foods associated with it, like candy/caramel apples, candy corn, Monkey Nuts (peanuts in the shell), and Roasted pumpkin seeds: Read a book that is a guilty indulgence for you, a book that has a brown cover, or a book that has the colors yellow, orange and white all on the cover.

Spell-It-Out: Use a word that reminds you of something about Halloween, or choose one of the words associated with October, then spell it out. Read books with titles, series names, authors (first or last name), character (first or last name), that begin with letters that correspond to letters of the word you choose. You may ignore the indefinite and definite articles (a, an, the, etc.). Such as:

I'm going to spell out Hop Tu Naa. This is the Manx Celtic New Year's Eve celebration that we still observe in the Isle of Man. We combine Celtic traditions with the newer Halloween ones and it is my favourite day of the year!
