Richard Penn (richardpenn) | 758 comments Basically, KE, this is it. Not this thread, but the broader group it belongs to. However, I'm not convinced about promoting books on here. It's great for getting adivce from other authors, editors and so on, and for those who want to do review exchanges, but I don't think the many "buy my book" posts reach readers. Other authors aren't our market, and there's not many avid readers on here.
I've only ever seen a rise in sales when outside bloggers mention or review my books, ones who specialise in the very specific kind of work I produce, or in the (non-fiction) issues raised by my work. How do you get the attention of folks like that? I have no clue, but tweeting and contributing to relevant facebook groups seems to help.
I move a lot of copies by offering my work for free, and that leads to readers buying other books in the series, but I can't say I've had any kind of breakthrough.
Goodreads and the related groups in the publishing world are totally disconnected from the readership for science fiction. The vast majority of SF readers are interested in specific Hollywood-driven franchises from the Trek,Wars and comic genres, or in spin-offs from video games. Among the rest, readers like a particular author and if they look for new authors at all, want to find similar ones.
Sorry if this sounds a bit negative. I've obviously not had a lot of success promoting my work, so advising others on how to promote theirs... may not be my best role. I do find a lot of people on here who say the answer is "send me money." Luckily I'm immune to their wiles, because I don't have any. :-)
