André Marques For me, Murthaug was one of the coolest and most badass characters in Inheritance Cycle, with an awesome and tragic backstory. But he wasn't one of my favorites, because I think Paolini never devolped him to his potential. He could be one of the best characters in all the series, he really could. He is kind of the negative of Eragon, and he helps the main character grow. Murthaug confronts him with what he could have been and makes Eragon think a lot.

But, in the end, Murthaug is just kind of an annoying character. From the moment he's captured, he just has 3 states: "I hate Galbatorix, he's evil and I'll never be part of his cause" (1), "I hate Galbatorix, but there's nothing I can do because he knows my real name and Thorn's" (2) and "Galbatorix isn't that bad, I don't understand all the hate against him". (3) Those 3 states change almost randomly, like his bipolar or something.

For example, one of his conversations with Nasuada literally went like this: Nasuada asks him how much Galbatorix knows about the Varden, and he answers “almost everything.” . She then asks him if there's any way to kill the king, and, after saying some theories and possibilities (1), Murthaug concludes that there's probably none. (2) Nasuada then says "come on think". After some silence, he says: "Wouldn't it be so bad that Galbatorix remained king? The world he imagines is a good world. If he defeats the Varden, all Algaesia will remain in peace. He'll put an end to the abuse of magic and elves, dwarves and humans will stop having reasons to hate each other. (...) But if Varden win, Thorn and I will die. It is the only possibility." (3). She then just responds: "Oh yeah? What about me? If Galbatorix wins I will become a slave." and he instantly changes his mind again, saying "what alternative do I have?" (2). But, in the end, he makes plans to fool Galbatorix and run away with her anyway *sigh* (1)

Nasuada later finds out, upon touching his mind, that he's a good person. But, if he hates Galbatorix so much, why doesn't he try to fight his control? A person like the book describes would try anything to escape his slavery. In the end of the second book, in the Burning Plains, Eragon shows him an option that was very likely to free him, but he doesn't even consider it, like he didn't want to take the easy path and end that arc. Once again, he argumented that it would be useless (2). They talk a bit more, and he ends up saying that Galbatorix is right and that he’s not that bad of a man (AGAIN!) (3). In the end of the fight however, he spares Eragon for no apparent reason, even stating that he would be punished for that............ -.- (1)

You see my point? Murthaug is a character with great potencial, but it falls kind of short to it, with no clear motivations. That's why I think a chapter in Maurthaug's POV would be just great. More than one would be ideal, but just one would already do the trick. It would help clear his struggle, and make it more real so we understand why a good man who could have been Eragon isn't. It could explain with more details why he’s impriosed and whatever spells Galbatorix casted on him. I also think it would help flesh out what is happening in Uru'baen and what Galbatorix is doing, while the Varden fight their way to the capital.

P.S. - Don't spoil Inheritance much for me :P. I'm like at page 520, at the part where Murthaug is still planning his escape with Nasuada and she's allucinating and shit.
