Elizabeth (persephone17) So, for this month the theme was very simple: suggest a book by an Asian author. There were TONS of suggestions(yay!) but it seems like lots of people want to read Mindy Kaling's book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?. I've already read it, and I can say, good choice, you guys! Here's a synopsis:

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

Happy reading! Post your questions/comments/reviews on here; let's get a big discussion going. We haven't had one of those in awhile.
(I'll also be out of town, in Key West, until July 14, so my getting on here will be sporadic. Still send me messages if you need codes or anything, and I'll get to them. :) - Elizabeth)

Claire | 45 comments I read this at the end of June... Like the very last week. And whilst I remember enjoying it at the time, I can hardly remember what I read.

I like the conversational style it's written in, like Mindy is your friend and you're having a bit of a gossip over a cup of tea or something.

I think my favourite bit was about the photo shoot where she insisted on wearing the sparkly dress and making them alter it.

message 3: by Erica (new)

Erica I like Mindy Kaling. I like her show. But this book was a little too bloggy for my taste. (I think I'm just not the right audience for it.) The part about her childhood was really boring and many parts felt like a waste of paper. However, her move to New York and attempt to get her career started was really funny and enjoyable. The beginning of the book made me yawn, the middle made me laugh, and the end made me skim. It was about what I'd expect from a celebrity bio. But I agree with Claire about the sparkly dress held together by canvas and pins--that made the read worthwhile.

Sarah (newlyblank) I love this book! I listened to it earlier this year and she was the reader and I think that added something to the whole thing. I can't wait to see what other people think.

Elizabeth (persephone17) I read this last October, and really enjoyed it at the time, but I agree with Claire- I'm foggy on the details of it. Of course, thinking back on it I can remember most of it, but it's more something you read to enjoy and not really something that makes you think, if that makes sense?
I love Mindy, though, and I enjoy her tone and writing style- she felt like a best friend talking one on one to me. Actually, my favorite part of the book was her best friend rules- they're exactly how I am with my best friends. Here they are:
