Sometimes books grab you at the very beginning, others, not so much, so let's share our thoughts on the first line of the book you are currently reading at the moment. So go on, flip back to the very first page :)

What can I say about that line? Well... I guess it gets the reader's attention slightly, since they'll ask "What kind of dream?" and they'll begin to read on. That's what happened for me, at least. And it's got something to do with the plot, too, not just some random line. The main character has the Knowing, which allows her to sense impending things and one of the forms of the Knowing are dreams, most probably. (Can't say definitely, since I'm not even halfway through yet.)
After a year of slavery in the Salt Mines of Endovier, Celaena Sardothien was accustomed to being escorted everywhere in shackles and at sword-point.

To be honest, I think this sentence is very lengthy for the first line in the book. And I believe that books that grab your attention usually have like really short and sharp, mysterious first lines. But I guess in a way it's a good introductory statement because the reader is left wondering how come she is kept in shackles and at sword-point, it's as if the suspense has already begun.

I love this book! :D Chaol <3

Quite short, but intriguing. The first thought that came to mind was how the narrator felt someone else's fear--was it literal or figurative?
@Connie OMG!! IKNOW EXACTLY HOW YOU FEEL!!! CHAOL IS BEAUTIFUL!!!

Aaaaaggh, YES. Chaol is the best. Why can't real boys like this exist? xD

Seriously? Is that it? Is that supposed to convince me to keep reading? Why Cassie Clare.. Whyyy? (this is a re-read, but seriously shame on that first line...)

"Just coffee, please"

I guess that's true, but the City of Fallen Angels isn't Cassandra Clare's debut book, or the first book of the series, so readers wouldn't exactly be reading it because the beginning hooked them. They'll be reading it because they want to know what happens after the previous book and that sort, so maybe Clare didn't find that she needed a better first line?

I actually kind of like it when a book (especially a debut) opens with dialogue. I feel like there's something interesting already going on, and if the first line of dialogue is weird enough, then it makes me more curious as to what they're talking about and what's happening. Also, if it's a debut, it's a nice way to give the reader a fun first impression of the main character.

Quite a first line :)

Oh, was it the lawyer who collapsed? (Actually I'm not so sure, just wanted to test my memory.)

I believe so, yes - Julian Mantle is his name. It's a bad thing when your lawyer just collapses in the middle of a trial

Quite a first line :)"

Shouldn't they teach you not to collapse in the middle of a trial in law school? smh

Was it a good book? I'm still not so sure whether I should read it yet.

I think it was because of a heart attack, because you can't control those kind of things.

Yeah, it was. It's very inspirational (in my opinion)

(I was joking about that) Well, then that's pretty bad.

@Amee: Yeah, I knew you were joking, just wanted you to know a bit. He survived, though. (I think.)

In that case, it sounds like a pretty interesting book ^.^

...wow, that was intense!

...wow, that was intense!"
Wow, what book is that from?

-A Clockwork Heart by Liesel Schwarz
I don't really like the fairy's p.o.v but I guess it's important.

Eh. It sort of interested me, but not in a wow, I need to keep reading way.

Okay, so that one sentence just by itself isn't extremely grabbing, but since I came in knowing a tad about what this book involved, I was interested immediately.

Definitely catches attention, and creates some sympathy towards the narrator.
