Lori (lorilovesbooks) | 350 comments SIERRA AVALON is the author of ALWAYS RAYNE, the first book in the ALWAYS SOMETIMES NEVER series. She writes contemporary romance novels with a little sass and lots of spice. She lives in a small town outside of Phoenix, Arizona with her husband and their bloodhounds. SIERRA also writes romance under the pen names Dakota Madison and Savannah Young.

Always Rayne

W.M.J. Kreucher You've written a lot of books under a number of pen names. Do you find it earier to self-publish or go the small press route?

Trumillia Lunnie-Thomas (tlthomas) | 3 comments Hi, good to be here! What advice would you give a fellow author with regards to developing a base of readers? Sometimes this can be difficult to do with new authors and I'm curious to learn how you overcame this obstacle.

Hi W.MJ. Thanks for the question! I actually own my own small press. In addition to publishing the book I've written under my pen names (and my legal name as well), I publish the work of 12 other authors. It's definitely not easy! It's extremely time consuming, especially marketing and promotion.

Hi Trumillia- In today's marketplace, I think it's important to write as quickly as possible and put out as many books as you can without sacrificing quality. Last year, I wrote 12 novels in 12 months under my Dakota Madison pen name. That helped to develop a fan base quickly.
I would also recommend writing books that are in a connected series. Many readers enjoy this as long as each novel in the series can be read as a stand alone. Under my Savannah Young pen name I've just released the first two books of a four book series about four brothers. (Each brother has his own book.) I've also set it up that I can continue with another related series that takes place in the same town.
Finally, I suggest doing a lot of blog tours. Give your books away to as many bloggers as possible. This helps tremendously with discoverability.

Carrie Hulk (carriehulk) | 2 comments Hi, Sierra!
Unfortunately I am not familiar with your work, however I will make sure to check it out.

My first question would be about your Pen Names - how did you choose them and why? To separately see which "alter ego" would work best or just because you wanted to separate genres, fan base, style...?

Hi Madara- Thanks for the question! I use different pen names for different styles and sub-genres. Dakota Madison writes New Adult romance that also deals with social issues (such as suicide and treatment of people with physical challenges). Savannah Young writes contemporary romance for a broader age range and her work has a little more "spice." Sierra Avalon writes New Adult romance that is a bit edgier and spicier that Dakota Madison.
"Dakota" and "Madison" are the names of my bloodhounds. "Savannah" was a bloodhound of ours that died too "Young" (at only 11 months old). From my house, I have a great view of the mountains ("Sierra" means mountain range) and I live in a community called "Avalon."

Wow, I see. Thank your for the answers. :)
A lot to think about as I would like to write with a pen name as well, but couldn't figure out the fitting one! ^_^
