Vegetables I understood, reading... not so much.

That is something I have never understood, especially at the earlier school years. "Quality" books are often hard going and forcing them on a beginner is ridiculous. It is the habit of reading that needs to be cultivated and it doesn't matter if what they read are comics, thrillers, or romance. Some may contain bad style or poor use of language, but if the students read enough in general, the quality factor will even out.

I am an avid reader, but I never enjoyed any of the books the schools required that we read. If those were the only books available to me, I probably would never have developed the habit of reading either.

Some of the books I was made to read at school weren't necessarily ones that I enjoyed reading. I was lucky to have a fantastic library in my local area and family members who loved books. I think that is where my love of reading came from and developed.

I agree with eBook. If you take kids to the library to pick out books of their CHOICE and they observe other family members reading and visually very much enjoying doing it, that will grow an interest in reading as something enjoyable.

I enjoyed reading when I was in school, but always had so many "required" books to read that I had little time to read what I enjoyed. It wasn't until I finished school that I became an avid reader, going through several books a week. I like fantasy and mysteries -- apparently not too many of the classics fall into those genres.

When i was very young my parents did kind of "force" me into reading, i was about to start school and my mother thought that i had to know how to read before i start, otherwise all the other students would know how to read except me, so she got me plenty of books and honestly as i got better at it i really started enjoying it, and as it turned out i was one of very few students who knew how to read when we started 1st grade, but reading always stayed in my heart after that!

However, I never really liked books that i had to read for school, its just the tought of being forced to do something that just takes away the pleasure, even when we could freely choose books to analyze or review for class i wouldnt like it, simply because "i had to" and it got me in a really long-lasting reading slup during middle school.
