I am going to nominate The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, one of my very favorite books.

So Declan is Rose the color link?

I'll consider another title, or else come back and second another book of interest."

Thanks

I know it is actually the second book in a series but it can be read as a standalone as well.

Ooh, this one is good too! I'm working my way through her novels chronologically, now reading The Other Boleyn Girl. Really addicted!

I liked this book too and agree that it totally works as a stand alone. Good choice.

I've been wanting to read some Philippa Gregory for a while. Do I need to read the first book (The Lady of the Rivers) to read the second (The Red Queen)?

No, you really don't.

by Ann Cleeves. Part of the Shetland mysteries."
Clare this series which all have color in the titles was an idea I had. I've read them all. I nominated The Blue Guitar (which I haven't read) so I can't second but great choice!

Each of the books in the series can be read as a standalone novel but they are all giving you particular points of view of events of the time. Therefore, you read about some events in The Red Queen from Margaret Beaufort's viewpoint but then the same events are described in The White Queen by Elizabeth Woodville's (rival to Margaret Beaufort) point of view. I think to fully appreciate the complexities of the time you should read each of the books but they can all be read separately.
I hope this helps!

Philippa Gregory's website gives a timeline as she didn't publish the books in chronological order and it interweaves books from a number of different series. It might help to guide you on what way you want to read the books.
