But the rest of the story was often rather boring and not good enough to make up for it. There were a number of chapters where, and this might work for some readers, I felt like I was reading a thing where, all smashed together, Plato's The Republicn't like the characters of Socrates and the Athenian Stranger, but also because some of his stuff is inane and we know doesn't work IRL) meets animal biology meets anthropology current news stories and lectures and more. Some of what I didn't like is the same thing that ruined Atlas Shrugged-- instead of being wrapped up in the story (with or without a lesson, I want to be wrapped up in the story at the time I'm reading it) I felt like I was being lectured at times. Plus lots of boring stuff.

In addition, one of my pet peeves is when people use real in the place of really, especially in writing, and even more, too much swearing which is always a negative for me, even though it was only for one character, she did it a lot even when she got older. I appreciate different voices, but that just jarred for me--I thought she'd learn better as she got older (this character) and when she learned Klip she'd speak better, but alas, it was not to be.

A better novel dealing with sentient AI (I disagree that an AI can truly be sentient, but that's fodder for another discussion) that agrees with Chambers (not with me, but I gave it lots of stars because it is excellent) is Genesis.

annapi | 5505 comments I liked this book, but I will look into Genesis, it sounds interesting!

It's very different and takes place only on planet earth. Parts of it are written rather like a Socratic dialogue but without that nasty edge Plato gives to Socrates.
