I plan on reading at my own pace. I'm not very good at chopping a book into chapters

Volume One

It took me some time to get into the book. Only when Rebecca Clarke entered the narrative I really began to care about what was going on. I also started rooting for Jane because I wanted Rebecca to survive.
I liked that she leaves at the end of Volume One and Jane decides to let her go. It shows that she matured as a character. I think its interesting, that she commits her murders because of power imbalances connected to gender and societal status. These themes are also present in Jane Eyre, so its interesting how the connections and differences are written.

Progress: 15%, chapt 7, audio 1:47

I'm not that far into it yet so I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other. Right now she just arrived at the school and has found out the hard way how meal times actually go down there. Things should start to pick up some from this point on.

I like Jane for killing that creepy judge, but I don't really like her motives for returning to Highgate House. But it seems that she is actually growing fond of the new inhabitants, so maybe she won't kill any of them?
When I read that she couldn't go to the cellar I wondered if Thornfield keeps a Rochester-like secret there aka a mentally ill wife. But reading on I think it has more to do with Sahjaras mysterious trunk and the war in Punjab.
The change of nationality of the ward and household staff is really interesting, but I don't know yet what to think of it. It makes Highgate House a less drab place then Thornfield was, so that's a nice change in my opinion.
I thought the scene in the weapons' room was a bit over the top.

(view spoiler)[Just finished volume 1. Jane is becoming quite the murderess. Clarke has left. I wonder if we will see her again. I can't help but be on Jane's side. Yes she murdered Munt but he was a horrible human being. Plus she had proven her love for Clarke a million times over. But I do understand Clarke's side too. I just hope that isn't the last we see of her. (hide spoiler)]

Progress: 50%, chapt 19, audio 6:12

(view spoiler)[Sigh. Jane is now back at Highgate House under the guise of a governess named Jane Stone. The book has lost a lot of oomph for me. Once she got back to the house things are now moving at a glacial pace. I really hope things pick up soon. (hide spoiler)]
