Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments This prompt is based on the board game "Clue" (or "Cluedo" as it is called in some countries).

For those of you who are not familiar with the game, it starts with a murder taking place in a closed house. By asking questions, the players have to figure out which character was the murderer, in which room it took place and which weapon was used, the first one to find all three being the winner.

In the original game, there were 6 weapons: lead pipe, revolver, rope, candlestick, dagger (or knife) and wrench. This prompt is about reading a book that has one of those weapons on the cover or in the title.

Other weapons were added to the original ones in later versions of the game (poison, dumbbell, trophy, axe, bomb, syringe), and they also made collector themed versions (Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, etc.). The idea behind the prompt might have been to stick to the original weapons, but this challenge is flexible and if you really want to read a book with a light sabre on the cover, feel free to do it ;)

Note: you don't have to read the specific edition that has the weapon on the cover, as long as one exists.

-----------------------------------
Suggestions:
The list created for the group, feel free to add books to it:
Old Rope on the cover
Guns and knives on the cover

-----------------------------------

Optional questions:
- What are you reading for this category?
- Why did you choose this book?
- Have you played this game before? Do you like it? Has this topic prompted you to bust it out of the cupboard?

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I found two for this and I don't know what to do because I really want to read them both :-(

The Knife of Never Letting Go (dagger on the cover)
and
This House is Haunted ( candlestick on the cover)

My recommendations for this prompt would be
Graceling ( dagger)
and
Coraline ( candlestick)

message 4: by Shelly (new)

Shelly | 67 comments I will probably read two books for this prompt because The Hangman (Louise Penny's Inspector Armand Gamache#6.5) is only 96 pages. And, the font on cover of The Quiet Game is somehow irresistible to me.

The Hangman (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #6.5) by Louise Penny
The Quiet Game (Penn Cage #1) by Greg Iles

message 5: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3839 comments For my children's challenge, I am going to read Avi's Murder at Midnight which has a dagger (and blood dripping from it!) on the cover. This book would also work for other prompts (#7, 13, 35, 44, and 48).
Murder at Midnight (Midnight Magic, #1) by Avi

Here's my choices:
The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton (Candlestick)

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie  (Rope)
Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles, #1) by Melina Marchetta  (Dagger)

Marie | 1060 comments I'm reading The Hanging Tree for this one:

The Hanging Tree (Peter Grant, #6) by Ben Aaronovitch

The rope's quite hard to spot, but it's definitely hanging around somewhere.

Mel | 177 comments So far I've got three options for this prompt:
Gunslinger Girl by Lyndsay Ely
Revolver

Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore These Ruthless Deeds (These Vicious Masks, #2) by Tarun Shanker
Dagger

message 12: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I am going to read Let the Great World Spin because it is on my TBR and I,have wanted to read it for a while, I like playing Clue but have not played it in quite a while.

message 13: by Mariana (new)

Mariana I'm thinking:

The Winner's Curse- the girl in the cover is holding a dagger with her left hand

Curtsies & Conspiracies - this one is also holding a dagger with her left hand

Debutantes & Daggers - as is this one, is this a trend? Also, why is always the left hand?

The Rose & the Dagger - dagger both in the title and the cover (saddly, none in the left hand)

message 17: by Cassinator (new)

Cassinator | 8 comments Any of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series would qualify for this I believe since they all have daggers on the cover and spines ;) If paranormal romance is your thing.

I read this one that just came in Blood Fury :P

Gylfie Whitneyi | 10 comments The Sign of the Twisted Candles by Carolyn Keene has a candle on front. Plus in the title.

I guess left-handers like to have daggers..... or they're planning something together that involves daggers.... i wouldn't know [cause i'm right-handed.]

Ginger (Sproutygamer) (sproutygamer) | 9 comments I read A Gathering of Shadows by VE Scwab for this. It has Delilah Bard on the cover holding two daggers.

- What are you reading for this category?
The Assassin's Blade (Throne of Glass, #0.1-0.5) by Sarah J. Maas The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas

- Why did you choose this book?
It has two daggers on the cover.

- Have you played this game before? Do you like it? Has this topic prompted you to bust it out of the cupboard?
Clue was my favorite game as a kid. I loved it! Now I probably wouldn't have the patience to play, but if they had some sort of app or computerized version, I would try it.

Thanks, I've heard good things and was struggling a bit with this one so hopefully this isn't cheating. ;)

message 26: by Charlsa (new)

Charlsa (cjbookjunkie) | 547 comments I read A Quiet Life in the Country for this prompt.

This book was just an "ok" for me. I think I've read so many English mysteries set in the early 20th century that nothing seems fresh to me anymore. This book was light and made me laugh at times, so I guess that is a good thing. I enjoyed it enough to read the next book in the series but don't know that I will go further.

message 27: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | -19 comments Mark of the Dagger
Mark of the Dagger (The Marked Series Book 1) by Stella Rae
Author:Stella Rae
Read: 1/23/18
This book is the first in a new series for me, and it kindle if reminds me a little of the Mortal Instruments series.
As for the game clue I love it

message 28: by Becky (new)

Becky | 14 comments My choice will be The Muse by Jessie Burton The Muse. If you look very carefully there are crossed pistols (revolvers?) at the top of the cover. That was good enough for me!

Kimberley Stoeger brzozowski | 42 comments So I read the below book, not realizing it was a short story. Which I really enjoyed, but it was short so I am adding this book. Fundraising the Dead

Does a candle qualify (no candlestick) Where There's Smoke by Jodi Picoult Where There's Smoke? If so I would like to read this

message 30: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesbee) I read The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

Mistborn The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson

There are multiple covers of this book and not all have the dagger/knife on the cover, but luckily the ebook copy I borrowed from the library had the right cover!

I chose to read this book apart from the ATY challenge. I made a list for myself for 2018 of series I want to finally start/complete that I had added years ago. This was one of them. And now I will try to fit them to a prompt when possible :)

I enjoyed the game of Clue as a child, but it was not a favorite. I enjoy card games the most. I also do not own Clue so I have not played it in many years.

I think it's your call. If you feel comfortable with using this book for this prompt, go ahead :)

Jessica, I'm aslo trying to finish as many series I can this year! It's exciting because it means I can start new one without feeling guilty ;)

Votakubees (votaku-bee) | 24 comments Reading the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy by Philip Pullman. The first book 'the golden compass fits prompt 41 and the second book 'the subtle knife' fits this one. :)

Changed my mind. Reading 'Whichwood' by Tahereh Mafi. The main characters rope hanging on her waist. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

- Why did you choose this book? It's been on my shelf forever.
- Have you played this game before? Do you like it? Has this topic prompted you to bust it out of the cupboard? My Grandma loved Clue so I've played it too many times to count. I love it but I haven't played recently.

Milena (milenas) | 760 comments What do you all think of The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag? Is string acceptable for rope?

message 36: by Sophie (last edited Feb 23, 2018 08:13PM) (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I'd say yes, especially since there's mention of a hangman and it's about crime solving, it stays in the spirit of Clue.

Thank you, Sophie. I read the first book in the series last year, I am glad this fits.

message 38: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1562 comments I am reading Grist Mill Road by Christopher J. Yates .

I got this as an ARC from netgalley, way behind on reading and reviewing it. In any case about a crime so think it fits clue pretty good, not sure there is a murder but close.

I loved clue as a kid, not sure if I should leave that love in the past or try it anew as an adult.

message 39: by StefanieFrei (new)

StefanieFrei | 76 comments This perfectly fits the topic. I like the style of writing but not the basic idea of this book (despite of not liking Trump). I picked the book because I needed it in another challenge too, most of my Agatha Christies would have fit, too.
The German "Clue" is called Cluedo and I quite loved to play it as a kid.

I got it for my birthday last year and it has a revolver on the cover.

Have you played this game before? Do you like it? Has this topic prompted you to bust it out of the cupboard?

Why did you choose this book?
Because it has a revolver on the cover, and because I wanted to try a book by Jo Nesbo.
Have you played this game before? Do you like it? Has this topic prompted you to bust it out of the cupboard? Clue is a staple of my childhood by I haven't played it in quite some time and am not particularly interested in dusting it off at the moment!

I have read Girl Waits With Gun, too! A friend on Litsy was reading it, and I saw it had a revolver on the cover. It looked interesting, and it was! Really fun and also historically well-researched.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

I chose this book because it had a candlestick on the cover and because I am obsessed with Neil Gaiman and want to read everything he has written. I was also a big fan of this movie.
- Have you played this game before? Do you like it? Has this topic prompted you to bust it out of the cupboard?
I have played before, but I like the movie a lot more than I ever liked the game. I'm always surprised by how many people I meet who never realized that there was a movie!
