Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5358 comments Stormlight Archive. Also Redwall Abby if you count that as a fantasy book.

My favorite is The Wrath and the Dawn series. ^-^

Saul the Heir of Isauldur (krinnok) | 209 comments It varies depending on my mood, so flip a coin. Heads: The Name of the Wind. Tails: The Lord of the Rings

The Complete Malazan Book of the Fallen

I'm shocked. You never cheat Scott. I was tempted to write the same thing, but disqualified it, in that I haven't completed the series.

It's dense, but I've never enjoyed anything as much as discovering new details that have been hidden in front me the whole time.

If you're looking to get away with something my suggestion is to ask me rather than the other mods. :)

message 18: by Shaitarn (new)

Shaitarn | 2185 comments A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula le Guin - in fact I'd add the other two books of the original trilogy, but it was that book more than anything else, even LotR, that drew me into reading fantasy.

I remember the first time I started reading it - I think I was about 11 or 12 - and the excitement I felt when I realised that this was a whole new world for me to discover. Even now, every time I read the first few lines I feel an echo of that excitement.

Well, me and Laura preffered the 2 book Shalador storyline actually... for me, Heir to the Shadows was one of my least favorite in the series... along with the last book and one of the other middle books...

Is that books 4 and 5 for the Shalador storyline? Quite a few people said they really didn't like the last book.

message 24: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35397 comments Mod
I think Shalador is 6/7 or 7/8... it's about the descendent of the character from one of the stories in the anthology book (4 or 5 I think)...

The ending was just dissappointing... from what I remember, it was just a catalogue of how (view spoiler)

message 25: by Loralie (new)

Loralie | 48 comments It's so hard to pick one, but for me it's probably "A Song for Arbonne" by Guy Gavriel Kay.

message 26: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 1578 comments The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. Fantastic book.

Saul the Heir of Isauldur (krinnok) | 209 comments I've yet to read anything from the Stormilight Archive, so I can't really speak for it, though I do know that Sanderson is pretty darn good. But I do know that A Song for Arbonne is really good. Kay is an awesome author.

I guess part B to the question: favorite fantasy book from before the 90s (that's when fantasy began to gain legitimacy as a literary genre).

If I had to choose one from before the 90s I would definitely say Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock.

Oddly enough, I'd never heard of Moorcock before this year, and now I can't get enough of his stories. That certainly is a good one! I just read it not two weeks past, and I'm now trying to get the chronological second.

I read it when I was 14 and it's the only book that stuck with me on a deeper level. You should really read the whole series. ;)

I rate the books 5 stars, but have found minor things to quibble about in each so far... Kaladin in book 1 was mopey at the start, and it made me hard to like him at first... and in the second one Shallan was too good to be true... hopefully Dalinar doesn't have an annoying trait as the main POV of Oathbringer to continue the trend...

I dunno if Urban Fantasy counts here, but if so I pick Written in Red... I read it in a single 10hr stretch the first time, and rate the first 4 books in the series 6 stars...

LOL, I'm used to that by now. My real life name is Andrea but I decided to use the name of my World of Warcraft main character when I'm online, to keep a bit of privacy. ;)

EchoBaz(Unofficial World's Fastest Reader) | 459 comments That's easy! Beyond the Shadows (Night Angel, #3) by Brent Weeks II liked it so much that I read the last half in an average of 1.1 pages per minute, fully immersed. I told Brent Weeks this and told him that it was the best day of my life. He was really honored. he pinned the tweet for a while, and followed me back.

Wizard's First Rule was my first ever fantasy read! So, naturally, it holds a special place for me. Recently though my favorite fantasy read would be The Final Empire and The Dragonbone Chair. Basically because I can't pick between the two. I love them each for different reasons.

message 44: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Sussman Terry Brooks' Shannara series is my all time favorite.

message 45: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (vinjii) | 1144 comments This is such a difficult question. I feel like the answer is: none yet. I love to read fantasy but there isn’t one book I’d choose to read again and again. Maybe I’ll find one of those soon.

message 46: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 653 comments It's tough to narrow down to a single book, since fantasy so often is written in a series. I guess the answer would most likely either be my favorite entry from my favorite series (Memory of Light from Wheel of Time) or favorite stand-alone (Lions of Al-Rassan). I'll give the nod to Memory of Light.

message 47: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments Hmmm...:I’m fairly new to Fantasy (which I can’t believe I’ve waited so long) but I really like the Riyria books by Michael Sullivan. Royce and Hadrian are my two most favorite characters. Granted I haven’t read any Stormlight archive books or Scot Erikson or Game of Thrones yet so this can change.

message 48: by Hailee (new)

Hailee | 2762 comments I adore the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik (I still have three books left to read as I keep putting off finishing because I don't want it to be over)

I also love The Copper Cat trilogy by Jen Williams.

But I think my favourite fantasy has to be the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo.

I am definitely a 'character over plot' kind of reader. If there is a book with well developed characters, especially well developed friendships/relationship they become instant favourites.

message 49: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katekrugh04) I can't just pick one so here are some of my most loved series, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Keeper of the Lost Cities, The Unwanteds, Hunger Games, Maze Runner, and The Theif Lord (I know it isn't a series but I still had to put it down).
