I really liked all the characters (well, the ones I was supposed to like anyway) and I thought the secondary characters and even the less important ones were developed enough to feel like I knew and understood them. I loved Lila...I have a soft spot for anyone (real or fictional) who thinks duct tape and WD40 are essential parts of daily life! ;-)
The plot was more than a little farfetched, but I don't have a problem suspending disbelief if the story is well written and keeps my interest, which this definitely did.

Lila's people watching and the homage to Rear Window were great.
I agree that the plot was a little out there but Nora's research into Faberge eggs was superb.

Your first Nora Roberts book? Wow, do you ever have an amazing backlist to dive into!

I know, as soon as I finished I was on amazon looking at all her other books. It will keeps me busy for a while.

I really liked Lila as well. Having moved around a lot in my life - I could really relate to her issues around it. Ash was occasionally annoying but I liked how they worked with each other's issues.

a couple of things surprised me: nr usually has great heroes, and ashton just didn't really grab my attention. also, her villains are usually more complex, rather than just cardboard cut outs, and i missed that. i don't mean that i like her villains, they are usually fleshed out a bit more.

oooh. hmmm. trying to think of my favourite nr books, but she is another author where everyone seems to have a different one by her that they like the best. I will say, though, that Born in Fire showed me just how much she actually researches. i would have sworn that she had personal knowledge of glass blowing after i read this one.
