Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Laura's Overflowing Bookshelf Challenge is getting a clean slate.

I am starting again alongside my trusted guardian Jeff. The Magic Book Corner's own fierce dragon. He's there even on my profile pic. The big fellow is pretty cool, right?!

My new goal to keep with:
for every 5 KU books I'll need to read 1 already owned book. And NO BUYING whatsoever, unless I have read 20 titles from my already owned list.
So 5 for 1
and 1 for 20

Wish me luck bookdragons, cause this will be epic! For me that is, not for you! :D

For more details, here

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Hi everyone. :)

I managed to make my thread. And here is my bookshelf:

My Bookshelf

And my Kindle Shelf: My Kindle Shelf

I am going to keep it simple and do the same for all books. I can buy 1 for every 5 books read (both shelves included).

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments I'm practically drowning in unread books so I'll go for a mini Book Buying Ban Challenge.

My goal is to read 5 of the books I already own before buying a new one.

And I'm including as new ones even sequels in a series. If I want to buy the next in a series I'll have to work my way through 5 of the ones already on hand.

I'll regularly select 5 titles to read and record the progress as the books are finished. No more buying any books from now on without cutting off from the existent ones! :)

Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8702 comments That's a really good goal! :) I had a quick look through your bookshelf, definitely some buddy read potential there. XD

message 5: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments I'll agree to any BR you'd like Siobhan. I need excuses to start reading them.
And BRs with you are so much more! They're always wonderful! 😘

You can type whatever you want in place of "my link text" you know... that just determines what word we see that we can click on...

message 7: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments I didn't know. Thank you Iain. I'll modify that. :)

Since you are using a link to your shelf for this challenge, you might try this link instead:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Make it a bit more visual... like an actual virtual bookshelf... there's a button on the page to change it to book covers... you can "copy that link location" from the right-click menu...

message 9: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Wow that looks great. Thank you Iain. I'm trying to do it right now.

Your bookshelf keeps growing... I see you added some Malazan... if there was some way to count the pages in a shelf, that would probably be pretty daunting... not that 1100 books isn't daunting enough... but you're probably looking at 330,000 to 660,000 pages there...

message 12: by Laura (last edited Nov 08, 2017 09:00PM) (new)

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments My total number of books Owned-To-Read at this date is 1120. (I had forgotten to include Erikson and Esslemont. Can you believe that?! As if they don't take a full shelf!)

Good luck working through it all... my TBR would be a lot worse if I shelved all the things I've signed up for and planned ahead much, but I don't really...

Miche | 3279 comments wow, that is a lot of books! Niki got some competion now. 😉

Good luck in your challenge! Mine is really helping me to think twice before buying new books.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Collecting books is my hobby. From the time my child was born and with his condition our travelling and my work sort of went down the drain. I found collecting books in both electronic format and paperbacks a wonderful hobby to pass free time. Especially with the low prices for second hand books over here. And I love tempering with my library! I even have my own personal catalogue. :)

My husband keeps teasing me that I'll probably take a lifetime to read all of them so I have to prove him wrong. :D Though he'll probably be right if I continue buying. He even made me a special reading room (both library and play room for our kids) with bookshelves on a full side of the wall. And commissioned dragon paintings from a painter to place on the wall! I love dragons!!! And my hubby is a sweetheart.

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) | 2388 comments Nice plan to tackle that overs flowing shelf Laura.

I too did something like this to remove few books from my tbr by challenging myself to read 10 books that are on my tbr for more than two years. now year is about to end and am still two books behind. :(

Anyways, all the best to you. not to buy books needs a lot of restraint. ;)

Thank you Miche. :)

I actually want to buy the final 3 books of the Wayfarer series (those with the nice cover art which have just become available) so I'm checking out for the 15 books I have to read before buying. It does make me think twice. :D
But I think I may cheat a bit the first time and read smaller books to make up the number.

Well, you did read A LOT of them already!! And your shelves are so nicely structured! And so many of them! That is awesome!

Saul the Heir of Isauldur (krinnok) | 209 comments I'd like to adopt your book diet as well, since I buy far more books than I could realistically read in that amount of time :D

Thanks... I cleaned them up last year... used to have shelves by series... but you have to start paging your shelf list when you have over 100 shelves... and I made the yearly shelves before Goodreads added the ability to track every time you re-read a book... and I added the BOM shelves as a 2nd way to track my buddy reads since joining this group...

I added all them exclusive shelves in the edit shelves settings so I could sort my TBR by genre as well, and find a book to read faster than digging through 1 big jumbled TBR... sometimes I think my organization is getting excessive tho...

I have 1 joke shelf at the end... "Twilight in the Title":

Crossroads of Twilight
Twilight Hunter

I just saw your love for Shalador's Lady while checking how many shelves you had... that's the only Black Jewels book other than the first in the series that I gave 5 stars... I really liked that 2 book storyline there...

That is my favourite book of all times! (That is those 2 books!) I found them a lot better than the original series. I know lots of people rated them low but I found them brilliant.
I've wanted to read the rest of Anne Bishop also but was able to get my hands on the books only 1 or 2 months back. I've already set them high on my TBR. Now with the team reading competition I'll finish them next year I think.

Speaking of team reading competition, does this challenge count for extra points in it?

message 33: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35233 comments Mod
Her Others series is what got me reading Black Jewels last year... all the Shaving and such was a bit shiver-inducing, but I liked the first book... the 2nd was a disappointment, tho... and I didn't like the 6th or last ones either... the rest were okay

Others are 6 star books for me, except for the newest which was only 5...

I wish I could find more books like them Shalador books... but it's such a hard thing to search for... not sure there's much like it anyway...

That's a really good question Laura, because that would be pretty much every book I read when I get round to signing up for this challenge!

message 35: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35233 comments Mod
Everything counts... this and the Shame challenge are good catchalls for most books we read... we just need to use first books in series that don't fit this challenge in the A-Z challenge or Book Bingo/Cover challenges to make sure every book gets extra points...

I asked about the Shame challenge last week, and every book in a series qualifies for that but the first book... you can't be incomplete/behind until you start the series...

message 36: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8702 comments Awesome. I need to get sorted on some new challenges. I'm definitely in need of the overflowing bookshelf one.

message 37: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments I have to update my shame list then. I haven't done that in a very long time. I think my books should be pretty much covered for extra points with these 2 challenges alone.

I'm a month behind on updating my challenges and trackers as well... it's a timesink... takes like an hour and some notepads to copy and paste between so I don't accidentally delete anything between editing posts...

I'm absolutely terrified of deleting my buddy read tracker every time I update it! Especially seeing as I'm doing it on a touch screen phone and the buttons are sooo close together...

message 43: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8702 comments Haha I have to earn any borrowed books too. I already have about 10 off Charlie I haven't read yet! :'(

I meant moreso gifts I receive. Can't control that so I reckon we don't need to earn them.

Wow. You own so many books. I have read a lot of books, not as many as you guys, since I am a still a child but I don't own a lot of books. BTW, I saw some of the books in your library, they are totally awesome. You should read Fault in Our Stars first. It was pretty addictive to me and I finished it really early.

I didn't own many books, either, before I had a full-time job... the library was my friend back then... still is, really... with all it's ebook & audio resources...

message 48: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Thank you Khushi. I will deffinitely read that one.
And don't worry about the number. You'll get there also in time. I took years to build up my collection. And now I'll probably take years to read it. :D

I read it when the movie came out and everybody was seeing it... it was before I started writing anything in my reviews... I think Choko's 3 star review mirrors my 3 star thoughts on it, tho... more depressing that I'm usually looking for in my reads...

message 50: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Even though there are so many on my owned collection I still borrow from the library. With Temeraire for instance, I don't have all the books and they are available at the library. So I'm getting them from there.
My problem is with the buying and collecting which I am trying to avoid.
