Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments This prompt is meant to help you discover new authors that have published recently. The easiest way to find a book to read is to sort your TBR by published year and look for authors you haven't read before, but if you need some inspiration, you'll find them below.

Danielle | 19 comments 2017 - Planet of the Apes Omnibus 1

I absolutely love the premise and social questions evoked by these movies and I was so excited when I stumbled across this book at a used book store. I have no idea whether it's a good read or not, but I can't wait to find out!

message 8: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3839 comments I will probably choose one of my GR wins from 2017. They are all new authors to me! We’ll see which one I decide to read first.

message 9: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 19 comments Yesterday I finished the first book included in Planet of the Apes Omnibus 1, "Beneath the Planet of the Apes." Overall I thought it was a fun read! Although I love these films, this was my least favorite of the 5 original movies. The book was very similar to the movie, but added in additional details and did a great job of recreating each of the scenes in my mind. I'm excited for the next part of the book, "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," which is one of my favorite movies in the series!

message 10: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments I had a good selection of many titles and yesterday it occured to me that I totally missed the "new author" when I picked the books. The list is a lot shorter now!
I'm planning on doing one book per year, rather than just read 1 book for the prompt.

message 11: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Ooh, I like that idea, Zaz.

message 12: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments This is a very broad category so I just selected a book from my TBR List that I couldn't quite place anywhere else - The History of Bees by Maja Lunde (published 2017).

message 13: by ~*Kim*~ (new)

~*Kim*~ (greenclovers75) I'm going to read How to Hang a Witch for this one. It came out in 2016.

2016- The Woman on the Orient Express by Lindsay Jayne Ashford
2017- Caraval by Stephanie Garber
2018- Red Clocks by Leni Zumas (Done Jan 20-22)

I was just going to read one but I like the idea of reading one book for each year!

message 17: by MN (new)

MN (mnfife) I read Nada Awar Jarrar, An Unsafe Haven for this category, chosen because I haven't read much by Lebanese authors. It was compelling but not an easy read because although set in Beirut, the war in neighbouring Syria is central to the book.

Andrea | 456 comments What are you reading for this category?
I read The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin.

Why did you choose this book?
The First Look Book Club provided me with an initial excerpt, which piqued my interest, and subsequent copy of the story.

message 20: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments What are you reading for this category? Siracusa by Delia Ephron

Why did you choose this book? Delia Ephron is a prolific artist, noted for her many books and movie screenplays written over the years. Although I'd never read any of her novels, the one I chose received good reviews and sounded interesting, so I thought I'd give it a go.

The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin

Why did you choose this book?
My book club decided to read this for February and it fit the topic - published in 2018 and I've never read anything by the author.

Katherine Pederson | 12 comments If Clara
(Sorry, I have no idea how to properly link this book)
November 2017 - Although I couldn't finish it, this book deserves 5 stars. (I felt I couldn't give it the attention it deserves at this time). The writing style is challenging, gorgeous, inventive, spare...not a word was wasted.
February 2018 - Oh My. I had to start from the beginning again just to get my bearings, but so glad I did, and I stuck with the book this time. I sunk with Clara and soared with Maurice. This is not a feel good novel with a pretty ending. It touches on subjects like mental health and the family dynamics around that, possible (?) incest, homosexuality, aging parents. As this is a book site, I don't comment on any subject in a novel...just the author and how skilled she is at "taking me there" no matter how uncomfortable it was. I had to walk away and take a few breaths towards the end. Fabulous read!

message 23: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Katherine, if you're accessing Goodreads on a browser (computer, mobile or tablet), you should see a 'add books/author' link over the comment box. Search for your book and click 'add link'.

Unfortunately, this feature is not available on the app (which is rubbish, I personally never use it).

I was reading it for the Read Harder challenge, and realized it fit here too, published in 2016. I hadn't ever heard of the author before, but I enjoyed it so I think i'll at least read the next lady sherlock book.

Well......I'm part of this group on goodreads called awesome reading marathons (or something like that). I don't join in every marathon but some of them, they are fun and there are prizes to be won! This one popped up and I managed to score myself a free ebook version :) The booked looked great so I went through the list to see if it would fit into the reading challenge and here it is!! (I would have read it even if if didn't fit in, but bonus it did!)

- Why did you choose this book? I'd heard good things and decided to give it a try since it was already on my ever-expanding TBR list

message 40: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3839 comments For my 2nd book, I am reading Far from the Tree by Robin Benway, published in 2017.

I chose this book for another challenge, in which I needed a particular word (FAR) in the title. The blurb said it was perfect for fans of the tv show This Is Us so I picked it up! It is also similar to a movie I just saw - Three Identical Strangers.

message 41: by Jean (new)

Jean Cole (joc724) | 324 comments What are you reading for this category? Tornado Weather by Deborah Elaine Kennedy

My Lady's Choosing: An Interactive Romance Novel - published earlier this year. Very fun!

message 46: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I'm chosen Dark Matter by Blake Crouch for this one, because so many of my GR friends have raved about it. I'm not usually up with newer books, so I take a lot of recommendations from friends for them.

message 47: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 555 comments I read The Toymaker by Liam Pieper - fabulous twist at the end

message 48: by Sara (new)

I read The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry

I had purchased it on sale at a friend's recommendation and never got around to reading it...so, it was good timing to read it when this prompt needed filling.

message 49: by Tracy (last edited Sep 09, 2018 04:28PM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Still hoping to triple up on these for my challenges, although I doubt I will complete my mid-grade challenge.

My original picks were:
2016: Salt to the Sea
2017: The Leavers
2018:Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance

what I've read so far ( instead)
Nothing yet for the adult version of the ATY challenge ( although the 2018 pick is still on my list)
For mid grade 2016 I read The Voyage to Magical North. This was a really fun story about a quest that involved a library on an island, magicians, and pirates. Super fun! For 2017 I have The Goldfish Boy on the table waiting

For picture books, completed all three years!!
2016:What Do You Do with a Problem?
2017:The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors
2018:Drawn Together

Our favorite by far was The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors, this book was hilarious, and I couldn't stop laughing while I read it to the girls. Our thoughts on all of these are on Z&K's challenge plan.

Why did I choose them? For the adult books, they were either highly rated or for 2017 and 2018 they were highly rated books that I owned and slotted into the category. For my mid grade and picture books, I looked at the recent GR choice award winners and nominees and chose books that I thought we would enjoy.

message 50: by Erika (new)

Erika wickwire I happened to start a book this morning, a book of the month selection from a few months back. It is called Sweet Little Lies by Caz Frear published this year. So it happens to fit for this week. Lucky me.
