Luella Hello,

Feel free to nominate a topic however please keep in mind we would like the members who nominate the book to lead the discussions.

Rules
1. One book per person and the nominator must lead the discussion
2. Must have 5,000 ratings or less
3. Forgotten Classics must be 50 years or older (cut off 1967)
4. Lesser Known books must be 10 years or older (cut off 2007)

Also as a result of the poll we are only reading one book per month so you may nominate a forgotten classic or a lesser known book.

Carol (carolfromnc) I nominate The Slaves of Solitude by Patrick Hamilton. First published in 1947; 242 pages. Only 1,448 ratings. Average rating of 4.08. Set predominately in an English boarding house located just outside of London, in 1943.

Sandy, I note that you're in Canada, and maybe the prices I'm seeing don't apply for you. I am by no means a shill for Amazon, but my quick check of US pricing indicated used paper copies start at $3.45 (plus shipping) or $12.45 new (with free shipping for Prime members), and Kindle versions are $9.99. NYRB Classics is the publisher and might also offer promotional pricing between now and year's end. I wish I was familiar with the best Canadian used book commerce sites but am not. Does any of that help?

Worst case, maybe it's cheapest for an American friend to buy it and ship it to you :)

ConnieD (bookwithcat) I'll second The Green Carnation. It's available on audiobook at Librivox.

message 7: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Which means it's also on project gutenberg, here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/24499.

I'm in the US so I don't know what kinds of access ppl from other countries have to Librivox and PG... do any of you?

OK, the poll is there now. I've assumed that a week is long enough, so that there are at least two weeks between the result and the start of the discussion.

I will leave it to Luella to create the February nominations discussion.

The Slaves of Solitude has won the poll, so I have added it to the group bookshelf.
