Layton (thunderinourhearts) | 86 comments This is probably a strange question, but do you remove the dust jacket when reading hardcovers? I was watching some book reviewers on YouTube and they all seem to do this when they read hardcovers. I never have, I usually leave the dust jacket on.

Bill (shiftyj1) | 4891 comments I never really thought about it, but I always remove the dust jacket. I usually put it safely away in my closet until I am done and then put it back on. Either that or I will buy the ebook as well and read it on my iPad then just put the HC directly on my bookshelf. I seem to do that a lot.

Marie | 4028 comments I always take them off whether they are mine or the library as I don't want to get the covers messed up. Though some libraries have the covers fixed where you can't take them off which in that case then I am extra careful while reading it. :)

I never have and never thought about doing it. /shrug

Karen (hmssparky) | 200 comments Absolutely! That way, they don't get ripped, creased or even lost.

GracieKat | 195 comments I take mine off and glue them to the ceiling. I'm trying to cover my ceiling in horror book covers and horror movie inserts. If it's a really beautiful one that I want to keep with the book, though, i scan it and then glue the scanned paper

I dig that idea.

Angela Verdenius (angelacatlover) Always! I only put it back on once I've finished the book

Most often I remove the dust jacket, too, and also do not necessarily return it to it's proper place after finishing the book, but I have to admit that I am more of a paperback person anyway. Back in the day I've volunteered in the school library and I've spent even more time in the university library. Unlike community and public libraries (who'd rather glue the dust jacket to the hard cover), school and university libraries tend to throw away the dust jackets when cataloging and adding new books. Perhaps that somehow influenced my attitude...

Thank you! I'll try and post pictures when I'm done. I'm also mixing in some album at and paperback covers (the books themselves were headed for the library until they got dropped on from the roof so i thought i might as well save some of them at least).

So they do that elsewhere, too.

Tyler Gray (wickedjr89) | 936 comments Yes. The dust jacket is annoying when i'm trying to read the book. I put it back on when i'm done with it.

Erin (ems84) | 9052 comments No, I never thought about removing them. I always keep them on whether they are my own or borrowed from the library.

yes, most of the time. I got some great deals on 2 Stephen king books cause they were missing their dust jackets. 2$ each!

I'm unsure of what you mean. You've done it as well? I'd love to see it! :)

message 17: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments Always. It gets in the way when I'm reading otherwise and would probably end up torn.

It's also nice to see the actual design/font on the book itself.

Mixofsunandcloud | 538 comments It's a shame they don't really make the real covers for display anymore, the dust cover used to be the protection, not the main event.

Yeah, I agree.

Bryndís | 429 comments @GracieKat, that is awesome!! Please do post the pictures when you're done!

As for the dust jackets: I always take them of, because they get so annoyingly loose when you open the book! keep falling off! I actually love when the library fixes them on the book, because they stay in place. I love hardcovers, but I hate that the books become ugly when you take the cover off.
I was kind of surprised with the difference in answers =)
lovely, getting to know more readers!^^

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Yes, do you think I'm a savage?! :-) I can't stand the thought of the bottom of the paper jacket getting dragged around on my lap, chest, pillow, wherever I read and torn into jagged pieces. *shudder*

This is so funny! I was shuddering at the people who don't, till I came to this post and laughed my ass off. It would be a shame to spend the money on a hardcover just to wreck the dust cover.

I've never had a cover damaged by keeping it on the book while I'm reading. Now I'm really wondering what you folks are doing with your books that the paper cover gets so damaged... hmmm.... lol ;p

message 24: by R.S. (new)

R.S. Merritt | 205 comments I take the covers off as they slip when I'm reading them and I always mess them up. Then, most of the time, I lose the covers. I have a ton of naked books on my shelves.

I like to lie on the couch or in bed to read, and since my arms have the strength of spaghetti noodles, I tend to rest the book on covers, pillows, my chest to read and as the book gets moved around the jacket gets snagged and ripped. Plus, sometimes I like to sit curled up on the end of my couch and have a drink or eat a snack, and inevitably food and drink get on the book cover.

My husband likes to throw the DJs away. The horror of that! I like to take mine off and leave on the shelf while I'm reading.

😱 I definitely do not throw mine away!

message 28: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) | 812 comments Yes, I don’t want it to get ruined while reading. It’s too easy for it to get ripped or torn. I put it back on when I am finished reading the book and it goes on the shelf.

John | 92 comments I usually take mine off, though sometimes I use the flaps as a book mark.
