I've heard good things about the series, but haven't read any yet.

Thanks!
Thanks!

I remember the old Targets, where 150 pages was an epic.
Has me worried, especially with Moffatt and Davies involved, that there will be overly cute added bits.

I really enjoyed Moffat's Day of the Doctor. The set up is different from the TV story, but he makes it work and he gets to show off his love of the series and that, deep down, he's a Whovian still.

The War Games was two hundred pages.
Marco Polo was about 150.
But, the new episodes need more...?
Some of the best Targets were the ones which didn't follow the script too strictly. The Day of the Doctor is one of those which doesn't follow the script at all, in part because I don't think it would work for starters. What works on TV doesn't always work in books and vice-versa and this is definitely one of those times.
That's not to say that the script is completely junked, mind you, just that it gets reworked to deal with the amount of time a book can convey that might be jumped in a TV show (for instance, during the negotiations between UNIT Kate and Zygon Kate - which we see happens in a matter of moments but in real time took up to ten hours during which (view spoiler) happened.)
That said, John Peel's rewrite of Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks should have been incinerated upon arrival. Zzzzzzzzzz.

They looked at me, defiant. They each held a magic wand in their hand and now proffered them for my inspection. I fought down a sigh and tried to look impressed. I even smiled, approving, but still the wands were being held out.
Then, as I turned my attention back to their magic wands, I noticed something. They weren’t magic wands at all! In fact, I was looking at a pair of sonic screwdrivers. The implications of that took a few seconds to unravel in my brain. It is fair to say that in those seconds, for the first time in a very long and often difficult life, I understood why people carried hip flasks.
I scanned their faces for any trace of dignity, of wisdom, or any of those qualities I flattered myself I had displayed throughout my lives. Nothing stared back at me, except perfectly modulated vacuity. It was like watching television! I steeled myself, and spoke the necessary, yet preposterous, words. ‘You … are me?’
