About the Series
Jane Rizzoli is a Boston Police Department detective and Maura Isles is a Boston medical examiner.

When the author wrote the first book in the series, The Surgeon, she had intended this as a standalone book and planned to have Jane Rizzoli die by the end of the story (she’s not even the main character). But, she wanted to know more about this complicated woman so she wrote The Apprentice, featuring Jane Rizzoli as the main character and introducing Maura Isles. At the conclusion of this book, the author then wanted to delve into that character a bit more and ergo the third book and the birth of the series.

This series inspired the TNT television series Rizzoli & Isles starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander.

About the Author
Internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen took an unusual route to a writing career. A graduate of Stanford University, Tess went on to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was awarded her M.D.

While on maternity leave from her work as a physician, she began to write fiction. In 1987, her first novel was published. I’ve read the first two books, collected the others and tried desperately to get back to it. I’m very glad this was selected.
