We'll use the same themes from 2017 for 2018. Post here if there are any themes you want to add or modify.

That works for me - I think we ended up with a decent spread of choices for this year.

How about 20th century books that were written between 1900 and 1999 that may get us to read some of the classic cozies by Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh etc

That's a wide range of time that also includes newer classic authors like Carolyn G. Hart, Earlene Fowler, Margaret Maron and Susan Wittig Albert.

Perhaps narrow the time frames, like 1900-1920, etc.

Alice - Does books published from 1900 to 1950 focus on the authors you intend? Or do you want to include newer classics?

One challenge with older books may be readers' ability to find them. Some may be found on-line or through the library or at a used bookstore but it's less likely they will be available new in bookstores. The mods check into that when an older book is picked.

That is a great idea, Alice. We read one of Agatha Christie's books a while back "And Then There were None" I loved it and never read any other books she wrote, but love to see the movies that where made from her stories.

I would love to see them as our Monthly reads, even though we always read the first in a series!

All the Christie books are stand-alones. They may have the same detectives, but the murders are all independent. The only two books where it might make a difference is the first and last Hercule Poirot which takes place in the same town several decades apart. However, none of the characters, other than Poirot and Hastings, are the same.

Great idea! I've been meaning to read Ngaio Marsh series for so long and I'm definitely starting soon. Father Brown is another series I want to read (think I read one or two when I was little but can't really remember).

By the way, I always thought that Brother Cadfael series were written in the same era (probably because it was set so long ago?) but they are not! They are from 70s.

My intent was to get some of our older author's recognized. they can be second half of 20th century like Carolyn Hart, Margaret Mahon or older Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy L. Sayers, Josphine Tey etc. Would it make more sense to break this category into two?

1951 to 1999... Yes there will be some overlap of categories. I am fine either way. What does everyone think?

I think breaking it in two groups would work better. Some people of these authors are still available in new books. I have also bought some on Kindle..

So I see we have two books for January, what is theme? Carbs? Baking

Bakery for the theme with my choice being Kneaded to Death - the other is my own choice (just thought a diet one is apt for January lol)
