The American Civil War discussion

I am looking for a good single volume history. I've read multi-volume Catton and Foote and enjoyed both. I started McPherson, but just couldn't dig into it. Any thoughts on Harry Hansen's The Civil War? Also considering Catton's This Hallowed Ground, a book that somehow has evaded me?

Thanks! I've been reading Catton since I was a kid, but didn't know of the Hansen book. I think I've a date with both coming up.

Shelby Foote is great, but a trilogy.
