i have owned this one for a while...but i think the group read would help me get to it sooner. plus -- it might be scary. heh!! so support for that kind of read is never a bad thing. :)
from the book's description:
"Told from the point of view of a six-year-old child, The Bear is the story of Anna and her little brother, Stick--two young children forced to fend for themselves in Algonquin Park after a black bear attacks their parents. A gripping and mesmerizing exploration of the child psyche, this is a survival story unlike any other, one that asks what it takes to survive in the wilderness and what happens when predation comes from within."

which Susan nominated for August, but does not look likely to win now. (If it does I will change my nomination.)
It is a detective novel set in pre-Raj India, when power was in the hands of the East India Company and assorted Indian princes and a cholera pandemic raged through Asia, Europe and the Americas.
The idea for the story and setting sound good and M. J. (Miranda) Carter is a historian, so has probably done the research necessary to bring it to life. My other reason for nominating it is that my local library has a copy, so I can read it for free. (The library does not have any of the other long-listed books I have not read yet.)
