Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments This is a new folder so we can try out making nominations for our group reads, followed by a poll if it makes sense.

I suggest if we nominate series books that it be the first in the series, in consideration of folks (like me) who would prefer to read the previous books first.

Any other ground rules? Some groups ask the nominations not be too recently released by a popular author lest they be difficult to get. I'm not sure that is needed here since our group is small enough that we can leave the threads open until people get around to it, but I'm interested in what others think.

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments Personally I have no problem buying a book for the read. Odds are fairly good that I already would have the book on order, or have lined up somebody to loan it to me.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16925 comments Thanks, Carol!!
I don't think we need a lot of ground rules; we can just use some input for a consensus when selecting each book. I have found for myself that newer release books are often the most fun to discuss and will catch the curve of more people interested. (those who have already read a book often feel uncomfortable posting except at the last thread to avoid spoilers.)

That said, we were trying to announce early enough to allow for a library loan and two month windows for the discussion and then silly Dennis Lehane changed his publication schedule. What was he thinking? :)

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments Lehane does have "The Drop" in September, a return to Mystic River, paperback release.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16925 comments I see it's a movie tie-in screenplay type of book. Hmmm.

If you want to nominate this can you "drop" it in the nominations folder, Barry, heh-heh.

Russ | 347 comments Hi, all. Looking over your old "ground rules" discussion, can you please offer some guidance on how recent a book should be published to nominate it for a group read? I guess another way of asking it is, what constitutes a new release? Published in the past few months? One year? Two? Or hot off the presses?

message 8: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16925 comments Russ: Good question! We are flexible and have recently added several group read books on their initial release date. Ideally books will be available at local libraries and with advance notice of a few weeks easily obtained during the 45-60 day window of the discussion. I suppose depending on the popularity of a book the time frame for being "hard to get" can vary.
It seems that newer books are more popular for discussions so we have not shied away from them!
Does that answer your question, do you have some suggestions for books to read?

Russ | 347 comments Thank you, Ann. I'll do some research and give it some thought!

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments Having just finished The Man Who Cam Uptown by George Pelecanos, I think it would be a great group read. It is the best work he has done in quite some time, and is loaded to the gills witxh moral dilemmas to discuss and tales of redemption.

I’m intrigued by the book description of The Man Who Came Uptown and second Barry’s nomination.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16925 comments Barry and Jan O'Cat: I am game! With two group reads popping up (Tana French tomorrow) and then the Grisham shortly after ... can we do it a bit later? Let me look at the best timing to stagger start dates a bit!

Agree. Really liked that one!

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments I just picked up Rogue Lawyer. I know there was talk of making it a group read, but is there an official list somewhere? Asking for a friend.

message 18: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16925 comments Hello Barry and friend: Do you mean The Reckoning? That one is just starting as a group discussion. I’m not going to get my turn at the library very fast unfortunately. The threads are set up and ready to go!
The easiest place to see the group read list is from the group bookshelf! https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...

My large print copy came in amazingly fast so I may start it sooner than I'd imagined. I have a couple of juicy ARC's competing, however, including Peter Swanson's and Louise Penny's latest (thanks Sherry!)
