This topic is open for discussion of Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews. Be prepared for SPOILERS.

No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…

As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.

As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…

Sonia (darktalynn) It has a list of characters!!! It has Barabas's journal making and introduction of how we get here!

Now, was that so hard? Why didn't they make this before. THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!

And why does it has this final book feeling???? There is supposed to be another 2 more books, right? right?

*goes back to reading pouting*

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I'm just downloading the audio. I hope all those things are in this version Sonia.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments The audio does have those features. It was nice to hear, even if it was summary. I really liked how Barabas's journal sounded, snarky remarks and all!

*********** Spoilers Chapters 1 -3

I think it is very funny that Kate was recusing a bunny-cat for a job, mostly for the endorsement than anything else. First off I really want to see a bunny-cat, either they would be super cute or really ugly. I loved how Ascaio kept making fun of the animal, yet he and Julie had to break the law to see baby bunny-cats. I can't wait for Kate to rip them a new one over that and their school grades.

Sonia (darktalynn) Go read it! Quick!

I'm up to chapter 5 and almost hyperventilating!!!!

off course someone just spoiled my fun talking about something on the "to the readers" note that I hadn't read. Now is not a surprise anymore. I feel like pouting.

Lisarenee | 2046 comments So I read the whole thing in one sitting. lol I finished early this morning but but didn't get much sleep last night due to not being able to put book down.

I like the Skipalogue. I wish more authors did this. I wonder why they picked Barabus (don't have book in front of me so I probably spelled his name wrong--is it Barnabus?) to be the narrator of this portion?

Will write more either tonight or tommorrow. I will probably go to sleep early. I really enjoyed it and talk about a lot of quotable dialogue.

Sonia (darktalynn) Barrabas

I am still shocked. But I finished it 20 minutes ago, so, is too soon.

Lisarenee | 2046 comments It did have a ending type of feel to it. She says there's 3 more books they're contracted to write.

Lisa This is all good news! I have only just read the first book, and trying to decide which road to go down next...... This helps me make a decision thanks girls!

Sonia (darktalynn) OK, so, after staying awake because brain was too busy processing everything, here are my thoughts:

DO NOT TOUCH THE SHINNING SPOILER TAGS UNLESS YOU HAVE READ THE BOOK

The Disclaimer
I hated it was on page one. It ruined the major impact for me. Yes, the book still packed a punch, but it would be better if it was after the ending. At least IMO, it made me feel like something would be rushed over, and I was right.

Barrabas
I loved his journal entry. It was awesome. Also the character glossary was a nice touch. Someone asked why him. Why not? He was the pack's lawyer. He was Kate's nanny. He was the one that was always handy to keep advice and record but wasn't facing danger on this book. He was the perfect choice.

The Mole
(view spoiler)

Dessandra
I didn't had Dessandra in a very good place on Magic Rises. So, of course, Ilona & Gordon had to show me they are the bosses and the masters of creation. Sorry I doubt you guys.

Derek & Ascanio
'Nuff said. They were AWESOME!!!!

Hugh
(view spoiler)

The turn of events
(view spoiler)

I LOVED THE BOOK. It made me laugh. It made me scream. It made me cry - yes, no book is good enough if I can't shed some tears. Worse. It made me staring mouth hanging open at my nexus wondering what the hell just happened? It was that good. And after all processed. I can finally rate it.

Disclaimer:I'm reading the book in 4 different groups, so sorry by the repetitions, but it seemed too much rephrasing all 4 different ways

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I really enjoyed the book but like Lisarenee said it kind of had an ending feel to it.

I thought it was interesting that this book could almost be read as a stand alone. I wonder if that is a conversion to hardback thing.

Sara | 860 comments I have finished an actual written novel! Quite the achievement for me this year!

Thoughts -

Warning, Spoilers Ahead...

I regained my love for Curran this book - I was very annoyed with him in the last one. I didn't see him stepping down from the Beast Lord role but I love that he did it because Kate has sacrificed enough of herself for him.

Curran stepping down from the Beast Lord role -

1) Will the Pack accept it or will they still come to him looking for leadership?
2) How will Curran handle not being the big boss? Is he still under Pack authority or will he be treated like the retired wolf alphas?
3) Is poor Dali going to have a nervous breakdown now that she's in the role of Consort?

Cutting Edge -

Curran's going to help hunt Bunnycats! We should still see plenty of Andrea, Derek, and Ascanio in the next book as they are all employees of Cutting Edge.

Robert & Thomas Lonesco -

I loved the spotlight on the rat Alphas. The pair have been some of my favorite background characters for a while now so I loved the spotlight they received. We also received a name for one of the Jackal alphas - now we just need a name for the Nimble Alphas.

Poor Mauro - as soon as he showed up I knew he was a dead man walking. No pity for Ted though - I don't blame Nick for being so angry - he had to witness/participate in many horrors and Ted made his sacrifices mean nothing. At least Maxine made it out safely.

Desandra was awesome as always.

Andrea is going to be one badass pregnant lady.

Hugh is very delusional.

Ghastek's backstory was interesting. I've wondered about his name as it was so unusual.

Roland - Is actually kind of awesome. Terrifying, powerful, unpredictable. We know the series will end with a confrontation but I'm going to be amused by his meddlesome in-law role until that happens.

Lisarenee | 2046 comments I just realized I never wrote my thoughts on this one. I was running on fumes when I read this one. Too much going on and too little sleep.
