Sherri | 38 comments I love so many of the reading challenges hosted here, I thought a list of mostly everything I want to accomplish would be easier for me to track. I want to read many works & I saw a lot of people were dating their classics by year.

Very cool and a great list!

Terris | 4388 comments What an amazing list! You've done so much research just to find the dates for each book! I hope you don't mind if I copy it.. I sometimes like to read by era, and this list will help with that.
Enjoy working on this -- but give yourself some time :)

Hailee | 277 comments This is a truly intimidating looking list but I wish you luck.

How far into Clarissa are you? Are you enjoying it? I've had this in mind to read for years but have never quite plucked up the courage to actually start it.

Kathleen | 5465 comments Love this, Clarissa onward! (I have a spreadsheet off goodreads, and have similar years I'm having trouble finding books for.)

It's like a novel timeline, and fun to see, for example, how close Jane Austen was to the beginning of it. I look forward to watching your progress.

Thank you :) I am looking forward to seeing what I can do next year. I did get to page 500 on Clarissa, and I put it down. It is a top goal for 2018 for me. I think it is the longest written novel. My copy is over 1500 pages. I heard you can learn to adapt to reading older works by reading through a timeline. :) I had difficultly reading Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter, but his other works got easier after I read Herman Melville. I am hoping after reading many works of the 17th century I can read older works easier than I do now. :)

It is very ambitious list, now that I see it lol. For Clarissa I am on page 500. I put it down a couple of months ago. My favorite parts so far are the letters between Clarissa and her best friend. I adore the way Clarissa writes all her letters. The format is also interesting, there are no chapter headings, but I can't stop thinking about it, so I need to begin reading it again. :)

Darren (dazburns) | 2157 comments this is a great looking list!

I have 2 similar challenge lists which combine to span one book from each year from 1864 to 2017, and I agree that the best part was researching all the dates! [geek_smiley]

Thank you so much. I hope I enjoy the books, they are great for a reason :)

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 17 comments That's a great list! Many of them are books I've read or want to read. Clarissa, or, the History of a Young Lady is one I really want to read in 2018. I've started it before, but have always gotten sidetracked. I work full-time and like to work on cross stitch and knitting projects in my spare time. Audiobooks let me listen while I'm in the car, working on my projects, or even working in the kitchen thanks to Amazon Echo. I get through some very large books that way, but Clarissa is not available as an audiobook.

MJ | 176 comments This makes me feel better about my challenges. I made my cutoff 1850 for some reason, and it turns out that the two I am currently reading were written prior to that. Good luck!

message 23: by Sherri (last edited Nov 03, 2023 10:15AM) (new)

Sherri | 38 comments My original list over maxed the limit of characters...( :o ) So I took the duplicate dates and created a second list of works I would like to check off as my reading experience expands. :) The first list is my top picks, but these are just as important. I have also added a couple 17th century books (pre-1748) that I do own and want to complete sooner than later. Happy Reading Everyone. :)

Sherri | 38 comments I been slowly making my way through the written works that I have found from the great book. A Secret Sisterhood: The Literary Friendships of Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, and Virginia Woolf
A Secret Sisterhood The Literary Friendships of Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, and Virginia Woolf by Emily Midorikawa

This book is learning on the friendship between Jane Austen and one of the family servants, playwright Anne Sharp; the daring feminist author Mary Taylor, who shaped the work of Charlotte Brontë; the transatlantic friendship of the seemingly aloof George Eliot and Harriet Beecher Stowe; and Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield, most often portrayed as bitter foes, but who, in fact, enjoyed a complex friendship fired by an underlying erotic charge.

Wow, I am blown away by your planning. What a wonderful collection of books. I was particularly interested in the historical fiction challenge. Your approach of looking at the various people at one Court seems fascinating. So many challenges have us skim over multiple topics. I like how yours goes in-depth into a topic.

Sherri | 38 comments In the upcoming year of 2020 I would like to play catch up, by reading black-list titles, finishing series (😨 I'm horrible at finishing series) and try to read some of the past award winners of Goodreads.
I picked 8 out of 21 categories that I will focus on, trying to read the choice pick of the past 11 years . If I prefer not to read/ or it is too far along in a series/or I have read the "winner" I will see what are the runner ups, using a code (RU) to keep a track for myself.

Debut Author Category:

Sherri | 38 comments Subconsciously I found myself doing another reading challenge. In February I read a book about George Washington finishing it on the 21st. I looked up his date of birth, and it was Feb 22nd. I thought that was amusing; reading about a historical figure on his/her birthday month. Then this challenge took route. :)
I would like to read about a historical person during their birthday month. I do have to play catch up for the first month, since this idea didn't come until February.

Sherri | 38 comments On Booktube, I found a great challenge called the Booktube Prize Challenge. It has four rounds, 48 fiction and 48 non-fiction titles that many in the book community put together, I think many are 2019 releases. Susie | 768 comments I try to listen to at least 1 Great Courses a year.
I am currently in the middle of one on the Civil War, which is pretty intense, but learning a lot!

I didn't see that course, I will look into that one. :) I am always amazed at how much "suggestive reading" is listed with each course. I figured I can pick and choose what I can get my hands on.

Sherri | 38 comments Another Round of the Booktube Prize Challenge will start in February. It is the same rules as 2020, by having four rounds: 48 fiction and 48 non-fiction titles. After the fourth round in October there will be three books per genre, a total of 6 book winners. Some of these books are on other book prize lists.
Judges are assigned a group and in each group there are 6 books to read in a two month period. Out of each round, only 3 from each group will advance to the next round. I am not a judge but want to read the books :)
