The Mystery, Crime, and Thriller Group discussion

Hi,

I just started reading David Hagberg - Kirk McGarvey series and it says that he was no longer an agent because when he was sent out to assassinate someone, orders came in to cancel the assassination, but it was too late and McGarvey was blamed anyway.

I believe that I read a thriller book series in the past in which the protagonist had a similar past where a cancel order for an assassination came in too late. I'm wondering if anyone knows what series that could be?

I have looked through my ebooks but can't remember which one it could be because I've read a lot of thrillers.
